Materials for this project particularly easy to find and there’s usually tons of variety.  All you need is a bowl and base. Be sure to remember sizing of the bowl and base, for example they should fit nicely together. Also, choose bowls/containers that aren’t too deep as birds love to stand in the water and bathe.  I made two different bird baths; a taller one with bright colours and a shorter one that will be incorporated into our fairy garden.  Both are made the exact same way…easily! This DIY Dollar Store Bird Bath takes less then 10min to complete! Let’s see how to make your own DIY Dollar Store Bird BathWhat you’ll need Plastic bowl or shallow container Tin planter Hot glue gun with glue  There’s really only one step to complete this DIY garden bird bath and that is to glue the bowl to the top of the planter!  It’s surprisingly that simple. An inexpensive DIY bird bath that takes less then ten minutes to complete, you can’t go wrong with that. I used the light blue planter upside down to create a tapered look, which further enhanced the bird bath. You can see the planter’s handles in the above photo, of course if you don’t like this, you can simply cover them in mulch or dirt. If the bird bath is in the grass, the handles will be hidden among the grass and you won’t see them at all! Looking for more spring or summer home decor ideas? Materials for this project particularly easy to find and there’s usually tons of variety.  All you need is a bowl and base. Be sure to remember sizing of the bowl and base, for example they should fit nicely together. Also, choose bowls/containers that aren’t too deep as birds love to stand in the water and bathe.  I made two different bird baths; a taller one with bright colours and a shorter one that will be incorporated into our fairy garden.  Both are made the exact same way…easily!

This DIY Dollar Store Bird Bath takes less then 10min to complete!

Let’s see how to make your own DIY Dollar Store Bird Bath
What you’ll need

  • Plastic bowl or shallow container
  • Tin planter
  • Hot glue gun with glue

There’s really only one step to complete this DIY garden bird bath and that is to glue the bowl to the top of the planter!  It’s surprisingly that simple. An inexpensive DIY bird bath that takes less then ten minutes to complete, you can’t go wrong with that.

Easy DIY Coffee Bar Station Idea https://www.andthenhome.com/easy-diy-coffee-bar-station-idea/ https://www.andthenhome.com/easy-diy-coffee-bar-station-idea/#comments Tue, 23 Apr 2019 18:49:12 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4394 Coffee bars are a hot trend right now and they’re so easy to create.  The main elements to a trendy, great looking coffee bar are letter art, metals, natural wood, and of course – coffee!  Today we’re going to show you how to make a dollar store upgraded coffee bar idea that will be the centre of your coffee bar station.  This Easy DIY Coffee Bar Station Idea is easy and inexpensive, but really pulls the feel of your home coffee centre, in a trendy way! There may be a commission received if you purchase through links in this post* There are tons of ideas to incorporate when creating a home coffee bar from the types of toppings to the decor surrounding it.  Take these hygge inspired coffee cups for example, you can place them on your coffee stand and play off of the hygge theme.  You could add to a farmhouse look and make a coffee mug hanger to hang them on, like this Pallet Coffee Station. Whatever your colour scheme or material list is, this DIY Coffee Station will be the highlight! A quick stop to the local dollar store and some altering of materials and you’ve got this stand made.  I was able to find two wooden painting boards of different sizes that were perfect when turned upside down and stained a dark cherry.  To get the height, I used two table signs.  They originally had a chalkboard sign on them, that easily came off to leave a perfect post for the tiers.  Then for the top layer, a metal basket, I love this touch as it incorporates a mixed media feel and really fits with the current style of decor.   This Easy DIY Coffee Bar Station Idea came together easily and affordably!  Let’s see how to make it.. What you’ll need: Two wooden boards Two posts for the tiers (consider using candle holders) A wire basket Stain Stain sponge or brush Chalk spray paint White spray paint Glue (wood glue is perfect) Hot glue gun How to: Firstly, we need to stain the wood.  Follow the instructions on the side of the can.  I like to use a rag to spread the stain, but you can use a stain sponge or brush. Stain only the bottom of the board, leaving the sides to be painted white, if desired. Next I removed the chalkboards from the pillars, then sprayed them with a black chalkboard spray paint.  They needed multiple coats.  Allow them to dry between each coat.  One of the pillars needs to have another groove sawed into it, to hold the wire basket.  Be sure to do this BEFORE painting. DIY Coffee Bar! Once the stain on the boards is dry you can spray paint the sides white. Do this by covering the bottom with painters tape and some cardboard.  Make sure it’s sealed or the spray paint will leak onto the stain. Next, glue it all the wood pieces together.  I used a wood glue and allowed it to dry completely overnight. Finally, the top wire basket was added with a little bit hot glue from a glue gun. Once it’s done and dry, you can add all the goodies!  Next to your coffee maker for an instant decor upgrade is certainly the best place for this coffee bar.  Add a variety of jars with your favourite coffee enhancers, stir sticks, mugs and coffee pods.  Don’t forget to finish the look off with some awesome coffee sayings and word art! Top 10 Modern Materials for DIY Home Design https://www.andthenhome.com/top-10-modern-materials-for-diy-home-design/ Tue, 02 Apr 2019 15:12:37 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4340 Your first question might be what modern materials are for home decor.  If your looking for the answer or aren’t even sure what this means, you’ve come to the right place.  We are going to list the Top 10 Modern Materials for DIY Home Decor, these are the materials you’ll want to use in your home design, interior design and home decor.  Modern materials is a board term, and includes a home that features clean, crisp lines, simple colours and incorporates metal, glass, steel.  This is an exciting trend and we’re happy to share how to achieve it! There may be a commission received if you purchase through links in this post* Home decor, like any style, is ever changing with trends which is why it’s nice to create pieces that can be removed or updated when needed, without worrying about how much it cost.  Modern home design is very popular right now.  The use of mixed media within a neutral painted home is on point.  You can still add pops of colour, but sparingly and if used, it must add punch.  Today we’re bringing you a list of materials that can be used in creating room decor for your DIY projects this year, and likely into the next! Top 10 Modern Materials for DIY Home Design 1.  Neutral Colours:Remember that neutral colours don’t have to be light.  Colours like navy blue, deep gold, black and charcoal grey are all included in dark neutral colours.  If using dark neutrals, keep in mind that they do pair nicely with light neutrals of the same colour temperature…think warm and cool colours.  For example a cool charcoal grey will look nice with cool light neutrals, added colour pop should be from the opposite colour temperature…for this combo consider a warm colour like red or yellow.  Modern style suggests using colour in limited quantities, so choose only a small amount of colour, but make it vibrant. 2.  Metals:If you can add some metal into your DIY you should!  This is a look that is taking over home decor design.  We are seeing it in shelving, wall art and so much more.  Think iron, steel and chrome, also look for gold or rose gold metal accents.  Iron and steel can be used with wood in a natural form or treated with stain/veneer.  Chrome should be kept with other reflective materials like glass. Scatter rose gold hints throughout the home with vases, clocks or other decor pieces. Use Bold Design with DIY Modern Home Decor 3.  Wood: We’ve talked about the use of wood in home decor and for a reason, not only does if fall into a modern style, it can be incorporated into a farm house style, vintage and more.  Wood is very versatile and should be used where ever you can.  Stain it, shine it or leave it au-naturel.  Use it with other materials on this list like metals, leather, natural fibres and if you can glass. If you can incorporate barn board into your home, you definitely should, accent walls are popping up in home decor and I love it! 4.  Natural fibres: Used in neutral colours fibres such as cotton, wool and hemp are among the popular modern style fibres.  Show natural fibres in blankets, pillow covers, rugs, wall art and more.  These fibres can be used alone in a project, such as this Hanging Flower Pot or be added to accent another project. Another way to incorporate this look into your home decor is by creating a Macrame Wall Hanging…very fun and addicting to make, this art is coming back, we are seeing it everywhere this year. 5.  Glass: This material is a little harder to incorporate into a DIY project, but it can be done! There are many styles of terrariums currently available that look fantastic. You can also create or incorporate glass vases, lamps and jars to your home. Adding glass to iron or wood is ideal, coloured glass is also a great way to add a colour pop to a room’s style. Remember to use crisp lines and bold items in your home design 6.  Crisp Lines:  Modern style is seeing more lines in contrast to curves and circles. Crisp lines are included in patterns, such as chevron or geometric accents.  Wooden or concrete beams, shelving as well as accent pieces all help create a clean, sharp look. The bolder the better when making a statement, and this is especially true when creating a modern home decor look. 7.  Stone: Another material that is used in modern style is stone.  Stone can come in many forms, for example you can use marble, sandstone and even concrete. Desk decor, bedroom decor, bathroom decor is all a great place for stone to be when trying to achieve a modern style. Remember that large pieces create the biggest impact. 8.  Mirror: As classic decor item, mirrors can be used in a variety of ways. For a modern look, circles are acceptable as well as geometric shapes.  With the addition of other materials, a mirror can become a focal point in your room, for example see our Fringed Mirror for inspiration. Using mirrors in home decor is also a great way to brighten a room or make a smaller room appear bigger! There’s more Top 10 Modern Materials for DIY Home Decor 9.  Pattern:While this may seem to go against crisp lines, patterns are a part of modern home design.  Pattern can be added to a space in limited quantities in like manner to colour pop. A DIY project that has pattern in the design will accent a modern space nicely, when done correctly.  Use an area rug beneath a coffee table in addition to a geometric pillow on top of a sofa. 10.  Mixed Media : These materials can be used in addition to each other, in other words, use multiple materials to create one project. Many pieces that you can buy in store are already mixed media for example, a wooden table top with iron legs, a concrete flower pot with wooden feet, a macrame wall hanging with glass beads. You can really be creative when placing these materials together. Keep in mind a modern style is bold yet simple. We’ve highlighted some great ways to create a modern home decor look in your home. Many items can be bought online* and in store, but make sure you take a look at the product and see if you can make it yourself!!

Remember to use crisp lines and bold items in your home design

To keep this project under budget I wondered over to the Re-Store to see what they had.  The great thing about shopping there is they give back to the community, and you can really find some DIY home project materials there!   I lucked out and found this great piece of wood.  It had been treated previously and had a few nicks, which in my opinion gives this wood some character.  I did sand it lightly to help with minor imperfections and remove any sealer, then restrained it a shade darker.  I’m happy with the results. Keep reading for more, or scroll down to see the easy tutorial! Once the stain was on, I added the letters.  You can use a stencil for this, which would make it a lot easier…but I couldn’t find mine, part of the reno.  So I had to free hand these letters.  If you have to do the same, don’t press too hard with your pencil as the wood may be soft and mark easily.  Once the letters were painted and dry, a quick top coat was applied for a finished look.  Then I added my burlap strips and floral wire with a glue gun.  Finally a hook was added to the back.  Too much too fast??  Let’s take a look at the tutorial! How to create a Fun and Cheap Rustic Bathroom Sign What you’ll need: Three pieces of wood, they don’t have to be the same size! Sanding paper Wood stain White acrylic paint Letter stencils or a pencil Twine, burlap and/or floral wire Glue gun Scissors Wall plaque hangers Step 1. If your wood has been previously treated, give it a light sand to remove any shiny sealer…otherwise your stain or paint will go on unevenly.   Step 2. Stain your wood using an old cloth or stain rag.  Apply each coat according to the manufacturers label.  Apply as many as needed. I only used a small amount of stain and really spread it with the rag. Step 3. Paint your letters.  I recommend using a stencil to make life easier, or you can free hand them. Step 4. Apply a top coat for protection. I used a mat spray on sealer, anything shinier could clash the rustic look. Step 5. Once the top coat is try, you can add any embellishment you’d like. I used a glue gun to adhere the burlap strips.  I recommend twine or burlap as it’s the best of the rustic look.  You could also consider adding some metal elements as that is very in trend right now! Fun and Inexpensive Rustic Bathroom Sign

How to create a Fun and Cheap Rustic Bathroom Sign

What you’ll need:

  • Three pieces of wood, they don’t have to be the same size!
  • Sanding paper
  • Wood stain
  • White acrylic paint
  • Letter stencils or a pencil
  • Twine, burlap and/or floral wire
  • Glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Wall plaque hangers
Sanding down the signs

Step 1. If your wood has been previously treated, give it a light sand to remove any shiny sealer…otherwise your stain or paint will go on unevenly.

Staining the signs

Step 2. Stain your wood using an old cloth or stain rag.  Apply each coat according to the manufacturers label.  Apply as many as needed. I only used a small amount of stain and really spread it with the rag.

Adding the lettering

Step 3. Paint your letters.  I recommend using a stencil to make life easier, or you can free hand them.

Top coat

Step 4. Apply a top coat for protection. I used a mat spray on sealer, anything shinier could clash the rustic look.

You can really see how beat up this wood was. You really can’t tell on the finished side!
Decorations two
I used some floral wire to add some unique character!

Step 5. Once the top coat is try, you can add any embellishment you’d like. I used a glue gun to adhere the burlap strips.  I recommend twine or burlap as it’s the best of the rustic look.  You could also consider adding some metal elements as that is very in trend right now!
