Remembrance Day Craft – Elegant Button Poppy https://www.andthenhome.com/remembrance-day-craft-elegant-button-poppy/ Mon, 29 Oct 2018 14:05:41 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=369 As Halloween comes to a close and Christmas is on it’s way, we prepare to observe Veterans Day in the US and Remembrance Day for fellow Canadians.  It makes November a quiet and impactful month with some major decor possibilities.  You can change your pillow covers, place some paper poppies in a vase on the mantel, wear a felt poppy or hang some Veterans Day or Remembrance Day art.  The last one brings us to today’s project, a Remembrance Day Craft – Elegant Button Poppy.  So, in honour of Remembrance Day the girls and I (well, mostly I) made an Elegant Button Poppy Art that we can hang on our wall.  This craft is an easy one and yet looks professional, which is what you want from your DIY home decor projects.  My middlest daughter, who is just over 3 years, had a fun time creating her version of the craft while I worked hard on mine.  It didn’t take us long and we both had fun.  Here is a preview of what we came up with…     I placed mine in a black frame and added a light green card stock mat to finish it off.  This piece looks great on the wall or on the mantel.  Pair it with other red decor pieces like vases, flowers or cylinders.  This picture will also fit right in with any rustic or vintage decor for the month of November, consider using a wooden frame. Let’s take a look at the easy step-by-step.     Remembrance Day Craft – Elegant Button Poppy The goods:   – 8×10 piece of white bristol board – red buttons – red embellishments (I used some red jewels) – black sequins – green paint – glue – black sharpie (or paint pen) – paint brush   Optional – frame                  – card stock for mat       Intructions   1.  Place a few drops of glue in on the white bristol board where you want the center of the poppy to be.  Add the black sequins.     2.  Arrange the red buttons and embellishments on the board in a pattern that you are happy with, creating 4 petals.  When you are happy with the arrangement add a small amount of glue to each button/embellishment.   Almost done your DIY Poppy Decor! 3.  Being careful not to disturb the red buttons, paint a small green stem from the center of the poppy.  Be sure to leave a space large enough to write a saying or quote that represents Remembrance Day for you (this could even be a name).  Continue to paint the rest of the stem.  Add two leaves along the base of the stem.  Set aside to allow drying.     4.  Once dry you can add your saying, name or quote to the space in between the stem using the sharpie/paint pen.     5.  If you decide to frame your work, measure and cut a piece of card stock for the mat and place them inside the frame.     Viola!  A beautiful craft to help honour this special day.  Get your children involved along side or with the main event, they will love making this art!!  If you’re looking for more Remembrance Day crafts take a look at our Felt Poppy.   Need supplies?  Here’s where you can start* *Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links.  There may be a small commission made by our recommendations, and/or link to products mentioned or services on this website.  Any potential purchase you make will help us continue to bring you amazing content, step-by-steps and product reviews.  Products are not exact to what we use, be sure these materials are right for you!

Perfectly Cozy Popsicle Blanket https://www.andthenhome.com/perfectly-cozy-popsicle-blanket/ Tue, 28 Aug 2018 20:12:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3507 As we enter the final, last hurrah of summer, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. Beside our patio door we have a basket full of blankets that lives there just for nights like these, when its not cold enough to call it a night but there’s definitely a nip in the air. To add that personal touch, and to really celebrate summer,  I made this fun Popsicle inspired patio blanket that’s a perfect addition for my blanket box. No sewing machine needed here; just an iron and some decorative hand stitching. To be honest, I upgraded a $5 fleece blanket that I picked up at big box store but you could easily head to your local fabric store and grab a few yards of fleece if you can’t find one. Add some sheet of felt from the dollar store and some fusible interfacing – you’ve got a custom blanket for under $15! DIY Popsicle Blanket What You’ll Need: A fleece blanket Felt sheets in six colours Brown or burlap ribbon Scissors Paper (for making a template) Fusible interfacing An iron Embroidery thread and needle Cut out a paper template to the size you want your Popsicle to be. It’s easier is you fold the paper in half and draw and cut your template from the fold. This way the Popsicle shape will be even on both sides. Now we can make the first Popsicle. Cut the yellow felt in the whole shape, this will be your base. Cut an orange layer by laying half of the template onto the and half off. When you lay the orange felt on top of the yellow, it should only cover half of the Popsicle. Finally, cut the top blue portion by laying only the top third of your template onto the felt. When layered together, this makes our first Popsicle. For our second Popsicle, cut out a full template in light green felt, like we did for the yellow layer in Popsicle number one. To make the Popsicle bumps, cut out two strips of dark green felt and then round both edges to make semi-circles. These will lay in the centre of the Popsicle, side by side. For our last Popsicle, cut out a full pink template and then a half template in yellow. Lay the yellow half on top of the pink and your done. To make the Popsicle sticks, cut out three lengths of ribbon and then round of one end. Time to assemble all the pieces! This step takes some time, it’s not difficult but setting each layer takes patience. Cut out pieces of fusible interfacing (this can be purchased at any fabric store, it is a heat activated adhesive for fabric) to match each of the felt Popsicle pieces and the sticks. Use an iron (follow the directions for heat setting, but be sure to turn of the steam) to attach each piece of felt together. Attach the sticks directly to the blanket, this will determine where the Popsicle’s will be so space it out before you iron them down. Once the sticks are in place, attach the Popsicle’s in place. Add some stitches around the Popsicle edges in coloured threads for an added touch. And it’s done! Curl up on the patio with a good book and make the most of the last few weeks of summer. Enjoy! We hope you loved this DIY Popsicle Blanket!  Looking for more home decor?  Certainly check out this Beach Decor DIY Flip Flop Hanger or our Tie Dye Tea Towels. Four Fabulous (and Easy) Felt Pouches https://www.andthenhome.com/four-fabulous-and-easy-felt-pouches/ Tue, 31 Jul 2018 02:49:29 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3379 Felt pouches are fun, easy and so useful! They can safely store your sunglasses, cards, jewelry, passports, crafting supplies, the uses are endless. Simply size the pouch to whatever you are planning to put in them. This week we’re going to show you four fabulous pouch designs to inspire your creativity. What You’ll Need: Felt Thread and a sewing needle Various decorations Pouch #1 – Pom Poms Galore This pouch uses pom poms for a fun pop of colour! Take two pieces of felt and cut them to the size you need. Lay the two felts against either other, cutting the lining slightly smaller than the outer piece. Fold the bottom third of the felt up to create a pouch. Use some thread to create a ladder stitch on both sides of the felt. Follow this diagram to make this easy, yet impressive stitch: Photo Credit: My Poppet Fold the top half of the pouch down and use some more thread to sew some pom poms along the edge of the flap. Done! DIY Felt Pouches Pouch #2 – Pineapple Persuasion This pouch is made to hold a cell phone safe and sound. Measure your phone against a piece of felt. Fold the felt in half and use a ladder stitch along the open edge and the bottom. Cut a yellow oval and a green stem from a sheet of felt. Sew some small chevrons into the yellow oval to make some pineapple spikes and then use some hot glue to attach the pineapple to the front of the pouch. Complete! It’s really just that easy. Pouch #3 – The Envelope Two stitches is all that’s need here – no joke! Cut two pieces of felt into a square. It can be any size, but it has to be a square for this design to work. This time, leave the two pieces of felt the same size. Working with the square turned towards you to make a diamond, fold two corners in to meet in the middle. Secure with a simple stitch. Fold one more corner to meet the other two, and sew this one to the others. Add a snap to the middle and to the remaining loose corner. TA-DA, a five minute, two stitch pouch. Pouch #4 – Jewel Tones This pouch repeats many of the steps from Pouch #1 but instead of adding pom poms, try adding a brooch or pendant. Makes a great pouch for all of your travel documents – Bon Voyage! Pro Tip – make a few for different trips. Going to the beach – palm trees and sea creatures. Paris – try an Eiffel Tower. Cruise? – how about an anchor? We hope this inspires you to create many more designs and sizes  – be sure to share your project ideas and pics with us in the comment section! Felt pouches are fun, easy and so useful! They can safely store your sunglasses, cards, jewelry, passports, crafting supplies, the uses are endless. Simply size the pouch to whatever you are planning to put in them. This week we’re going to show you four fabulous pouch designs to inspire your creativity.

What You’ll Need:

  • Felt
  • Thread and a sewing needle
  • Various decorations

Pouch #1 – Pom Poms Galore

This pouch uses pom poms for a fun pop of colour!

Take two pieces of felt and cut them to the size you need. Lay the two felts against either other, cutting the lining slightly smaller than the outer piece.

Fold the bottom third of the felt up to create a pouch. Use some thread to create a ladder stitch on both sides of the felt. Follow this diagram to make this easy, yet impressive stitch:

Fold the top half of the pouch down and use some more thread to sew some pom poms along the edge of the flap.

Done!

DIY Felt Pouches

Pouch #2 – Pineapple Persuasion

This pouch is made to hold a cell phone safe and sound.

Pouch #3 – The Envelope

Two stitches is all that’s need here – no joke!

Pouch #4 – Jewel Tones

This pouch repeats many of the steps from Pouch #1 but instead of adding pom poms, try adding a brooch or pendant.

While most of the couple months will be filled with outdoor fun in the sun, there will inevitably be those rainy, wet days and before you know it cries of “I’m bored!!” are coming at you from every direction. Your local library is a great place to spend some time during a downpour. There’s not much better than a room full of free books  and a whole day to try and read them all. Many libraries also offer programmes like story-time or crafts. 2. Play Board Games Snakes & Ladders, Candyland, Clue, there are hundreds of choices. If you have a stack of them at home then endless hours of entertainment ahead of you. Once on game gets old, switch it out for another and them another until the dark clouds clear and the sun comes back out. 3. Bake Something Baking is a great group activity. With most recipes having multiple steps, there’s always something for everyone to do. Check out this list for inspiration, Top 10 Soft and Chewy Cookie Recipes 4. Lawn Dominoes for Summer Fun https://www.andthenhome.com/lawn-dominoes-for-summer-fun/ https://www.andthenhome.com/lawn-dominoes-for-summer-fun/#comments Tue, 15 May 2018 03:31:08 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3202 With summer upon us, its time to turn our attention to the outdoors. Earlier this week, Christine brought us a list of tricks and tips to help make your next camping trip with the kids an amazing one. If you found that post helpful, then you’ll love this easy DIY. Lawn dominoes are perfect for camping, backyards, BBQ’s and for kids and adults alike.  Let’s get started…. Cut 28 pieces of wood. You can either cut them from a length of building planks from a hardware store or buy pre-cut pieces of wood from a craft store. Use a few different colours and spray paint the planks.  For this step you  have a couple choices. If you have a punch, cut some dots from some thin craft foam. I highly recommend using a punch for this step, using scissors will take too long and be very difficult.  When using a punch, avoid buying anything with an adhesive backing.  The glue will get stuck in the punch and will make it difficult to use. The foam will be water resistant and is a good choice for the outdoors. If you would rather use paper, you will have to seal the planks after attaching the dots, otherwise the paper won’t survive he elements. The last option is to paint the dots onto the planks. Using some acrylic paint and a stencil, paint all of the dots in place. If you opted to paint on your dots, you can skip this step. Otherwise, glue all of those dots into place.   Done and done! Pro tip: Store and carry the dominoes in a laundry bag from the dollar store! We hope you liked these lawn dominoes.  Looking for an amazing recipe for your summer BBQ’s?  Certainly try these delicious Campfire Cupcakes!

Pottery Barn Inspired Easter Eggs https://www.andthenhome.com/pottery-barn-easter-eggs/ Tue, 20 Mar 2018 11:00:24 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1007 The inspiration for this beautiful Easter decoration is from the Pottery Barn website.  However, it’s sadly no longer available.  But we won’t let that stop us right?  After all we are determined crafters and what could be better than making our own Pottery Barn Inspired Easter Eggs?  This super easy craft looks like something you would buy at a home decor store and the best part is you’ll only need four materials! Pottery Barn Inspired Easter Eggs The inspiration shows plastic decorative eggs with letters on each that spell ‘Happy Easter’.  Our DIY is made from similar eggs, a sharpie, twine and eyelets.  All can be found at your local craft store.  You can do this craft with any colour easter egg.  Consider using a soft colour pallet with lavenders, pinks or soft yellow.  Or opt for some neons or ones that sparkle so they really stand out!  We went for a classic look and used white eggs with some speckles for character. The twine is also flexible for this craft.  Use traditional burlap twine, you could certainly glam it up and use a pretty one that has a flash of colour.  Your letters can be written with a paint pen or a sharpie.  Either will do.  Just keep in mind that a paint pen will need some time to dry before you handle it.  Not sure if a paint pen is for you?  Take a minute and check out The Best Sharpie Paint Pen Review for an idea of what to expect.  Now you have some choices to make, let’s dive into the how-to! DIY Happy Easter Eggs Inspired by Pottery Barn What you’ll need: Eleven decorative eggs A paint pen or permanent marker Decorative twine Screw in eyelets Firstly, write Happy Easter on the eggs with the marker or paint pen.  Be careful not to smudge the letters before they have time to dry.  I recommend having a place to set them down where they won’t role away on you!  Secondly, screw the eyelets into the top of each egg then thread the twine through each eyelet and make a loop.  Don’t worry about the length of your twine, they should be different lengths to the eggs some character.  Hang up your own Pottery Barn Inspired Easter Eggs and enjoy!   I hope you loved making these Pottery Barn Inspired Easter Eggs.  Not only does this craft only require four materials, it’s very simple to make.  I think it’s great because it’s fun for all crafters, whether you are a seasoned DIY’er, just starting out or looking for a great Easter kids craft.  Looking for more DIY Easter creations?  Certainly check out these Cute Critter Treat Jars for Sweet Easter Gifts
