You can find some of our other tray ideas here. Maybe because they are so handy, maybe because I have so many ideas for them, or maybe because they are such easy, fun projects and this time I was inspired by floral. Floral prints are everywhere right now and I wanted to experiment with them. I went digging through the basement and found an old decorative plaque that I’ve had tucked away and knew it would make a perfect little coffee tray. It used to hang in our guest room before we redecorated but I knew I would find another use for it one day and by covering the bottom with a floral paper, I turned it into a cute little single serve coffee tray. Certainly perfect for indulging yourself in the morning, in bed or on the porch and the best part is this project takes 10 minutes! Cut, glue, dry and done and then have a seat and indulge yourself with a little me time, then enjoy! What you’ll need: A small wooden tray or plaque Scrapbook paper Modge Podge and foam brush Scissors Cut a square of paper to fit inside your tray. Use Modge Podge to glue the paper in place and let it dry, then add a layer of glue on top of the paper to seal it. Once it’s dry, enjoy your coffee tray and happy crafting! How to Make a Macrame Wall Hanging with Natural Coffee Dying https://www.andthenhome.com/how-to-make-a-macrame-wall-hanging-with-natural-coffee-dying/ Tue, 14 May 2019 18:24:50 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4486 I keep seeing all these beautiful macrame wall hangings pop up on my news feed and for this reason, I knew I had to make one.  After my first attempt with macrame (see our Hanging Macrame Flower Pots) I’m consequently hooked on this trend! There are very intricate designs for the pro’s but since I’m new, I needed a beginners design. This tutorial will show you How to Make a Macrame Wall Hanging with Natural Coffee Dying to add to the fun!  If you want to try something new keep reading…I warn you though, it gets very addictive!A  There may be a commission if you purchase through links in this post. This macrame wall hanging is very simple and uses a popular, easy technique.  The type of macrame knot used in this pattern is called a Square Knot. The key to this macrame knot is to use four strands of rope, or eight when using double strands.  This one knot technique will give you a beautiful macrame design. Not only is a macrame wall hanging fun to create, will fit most home decor styles.  If you’re home decor style features hygge, famhouse or modern decor this piece is right up your alley.  In the end, I love the way this project turned out mainly because it looks great and it was so easy! How to Make a Macrame Wall Hanging with Natural Coffee Dying What you’ll need: Instant coffee Hot water A bowl Two doweling (one larger then the other) Cotton yarn (only use a natural finer when dying) Hot glue gun Scissors Accessories (like mini tassels) – optional How to achieve Naturally Coffee Dying First, cut and thread your yarn onto the short doweling.   Place some instant coffee into the bowl.  The darker you want the material to go, the more coffee you should add.  Add boiling water and stir with a spoon until fully dissolved. Place your yarn into the bowl.  I placed only the ends of the yarn, which created an ombre look.  Let it sit for about an hour, less if you want a lighter dye. Once finished, hang to dry overnight. How to Make a Macrame Wall Hanging Measure your yarn and cut it appropriately.  Thread it on the large doweling as above.  Begin to create your square knots with the instructions below. How to Make a Macrame Square Knot: First, you want to work with four strands of rope (or eight when creating the double knot as seen here).   Always start with the left side.  Separate your four strands and create a “sail” by bringing the outside strand over the middle two and under the right. Then take your right strand and run it under the middle two and up through the opening in the “sail”. Then, gently pull the outside strands together to create the first part of the knot, adjusting the middle strands as needed. Repeat the first few steps starting with the right side. This will complete the  macrame square knot.  Repeat this knot across the top of the long doweling.  Then complete a second layer of knots, repeating the entire process. Add your Coffee Dyed Yarn to the Macrame Square Knots Help tie in *pun intended* the coffee dyed yarn by creating a large square knot.  Divide the entire doweling into four parts and follow the same knot pattern as above to make one big macrame knot. Then using your hot glue gun, attach the two pieces together.  Use two strands from the large doweling and wrap them around the small doweling, gluing a small amount as you go. Finally, add your accessories Once they are secured together, trim the bottom of the yarn to make a point, or cut it straight. Finally, add your accessories You can add some colour if you want…because who doesn’t love colour? There you have it!  The final product.  I am addicted to macrame knots now and will be attempting more intricate designs.  Have you attempted macrame yet?  Do you love it, am I the only one addicted to macrame knots?? Yarn Wrapped Boho Picture Frame https://www.andthenhome.com/yarn-wrapped-boho-picture-frame/ Tue, 14 May 2019 05:35:04 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4475 Yarn art has been a growing trend for the past few years. Whenever I see these beautiful projects as I scroll through Pinterest or while walking through home décor stores, I really regret not learning how to knit. I did try to learn, but I could never quite pick it up. But since this week we’re covering yarn crafts, I scoured the internet for inspiration. There’s actually a lot of really creative projects of there that don’t require needles. Yarn wrapped, weaved, dyed, knotted – there are so many great techniques available. I decided on a yarn wrapped picture frame. This isn’t my first attempt at yarn wrapping – check out my ombre letters to see that. For this project though, I didn’t even need to shop! I had an old frame in the basement and some yarn scrapes left from another project. The beauty is that’s really all you need. I added beads to mine, but that is totally optional. This is a great way to add texture to your home in such a creative way. This one is easy, but it will take a bit of time so pop on a movie and let’s get started! What you’ll need: An old photo frame Yarn Glue gun and sticks Beads (optional) Start by tying the yarn around one side of the frame and secure with a knot. Don’t worry if it’s not super tight, you can fix that in the end by wrapping over the first strand. Continue wrapping the yarn all around the frame. I left the corners blank, I liked the look (and TBH its easier). Tie another knot in the back of the frame once you’re done. Try to make this knot nice and tight, but if needed you can secure with a spot of hot glue. If you’re going to add beads, look at where you want to place them and remember to thread them onto the yarn in the right spots. When putting the glass and backing back on, you’ll need to glue it in place since we’re covered up the lip of the frame. Make sure you’re happy with the photo you’ve chosen cause you won’t be able to change it once you’ve secured the backing. All done! Happy crafting! Top 10 Modern Materials for DIY Home Design https://www.andthenhome.com/top-10-modern-materials-for-diy-home-design/ Tue, 02 Apr 2019 15:12:37 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4340 Your first question might be what modern materials are for home decor.  If your looking for the answer or aren’t even sure what this means, you’ve come to the right place.  We are going to list the Top 10 Modern Materials for DIY Home Decor, these are the materials you’ll want to use in your home design, interior design and home decor.  Modern materials is a board term, and includes a home that features clean, crisp lines, simple colours and incorporates metal, glass, steel.  This is an exciting trend and we’re happy to share how to achieve it! There may be a commission received if you purchase through links in this post* Home decor, like any style, is ever changing with trends which is why it’s nice to create pieces that can be removed or updated when needed, without worrying about how much it cost.  Modern home design is very popular right now.  The use of mixed media within a neutral painted home is on point.  You can still add pops of colour, but sparingly and if used, it must add punch.  Today we’re bringing you a list of materials that can be used in creating room decor for your DIY projects this year, and likely into the next! Top 10 Modern Materials for DIY Home Design 1.  Neutral Colours:Remember that neutral colours don’t have to be light.  Colours like navy blue, deep gold, black and charcoal grey are all included in dark neutral colours.  If using dark neutrals, keep in mind that they do pair nicely with light neutrals of the same colour temperature…think warm and cool colours.  For example a cool charcoal grey will look nice with cool light neutrals, added colour pop should be from the opposite colour temperature…for this combo consider a warm colour like red or yellow.  Modern style suggests using colour in limited quantities, so choose only a small amount of colour, but make it vibrant. 2.  Metals:If you can add some metal into your DIY you should!  This is a look that is taking over home decor design.  We are seeing it in shelving, wall art and so much more.  Think iron, steel and chrome, also look for gold or rose gold metal accents.  Iron and steel can be used with wood in a natural form or treated with stain/veneer.  Chrome should be kept with other reflective materials like glass. Scatter rose gold hints throughout the home with vases, clocks or other decor pieces. Use Bold Design with DIY Modern Home Decor 3.  Wood: We’ve talked about the use of wood in home decor and for a reason, not only does if fall into a modern style, it can be incorporated into a farm house style, vintage and more.  Wood is very versatile and should be used where ever you can.  Stain it, shine it or leave it au-naturel.  Use it with other materials on this list like metals, leather, natural fibres and if you can glass. If you can incorporate barn board into your home, you definitely should, accent walls are popping up in home decor and I love it! 4.  Natural fibres: Used in neutral colours fibres such as cotton, wool and hemp are among the popular modern style fibres.  Show natural fibres in blankets, pillow covers, rugs, wall art and more.  These fibres can be used alone in a project, such as this Hanging Flower Pot or be added to accent another project. Another way to incorporate this look into your home decor is by creating a Macrame Wall Hanging…very fun and addicting to make, this art is coming back, we are seeing it everywhere this year. 5.  Glass: This material is a little harder to incorporate into a DIY project, but it can be done! There are many styles of terrariums currently available that look fantastic. You can also create or incorporate glass vases, lamps and jars to your home. Adding glass to iron or wood is ideal, coloured glass is also a great way to add a colour pop to a room’s style. Remember to use crisp lines and bold items in your home design 6.  Crisp Lines:  Modern style is seeing more lines in contrast to curves and circles. Crisp lines are included in patterns, such as chevron or geometric accents.  Wooden or concrete beams, shelving as well as accent pieces all help create a clean, sharp look. The bolder the better when making a statement, and this is especially true when creating a modern home decor look. 7.  Stone: Another material that is used in modern style is stone.  Stone can come in many forms, for example you can use marble, sandstone and even concrete. Desk decor, bedroom decor, bathroom decor is all a great place for stone to be when trying to achieve a modern style. Remember that large pieces create the biggest impact. 8.  Mirror: As classic decor item, mirrors can be used in a variety of ways. For a modern look, circles are acceptable as well as geometric shapes.  With the addition of other materials, a mirror can become a focal point in your room, for example see our Fringed Mirror for inspiration. Using mirrors in home decor is also a great way to brighten a room or make a smaller room appear bigger! There’s more Top 10 Modern Materials for DIY Home Decor 9.  Pattern:While this may seem to go against crisp lines, patterns are a part of modern home design.  Pattern can be added to a space in limited quantities in like manner to colour pop. A DIY project that has pattern in the design will accent a modern space nicely, when done correctly.  Use an area rug beneath a coffee table in addition to a geometric pillow on top of a sofa. 10.  Mixed Media : These materials can be used in addition to each other, in other words, use multiple materials to create one project. Many pieces that you can buy in store are already mixed media for example, a wooden table top with iron legs, a concrete flower pot with wooden feet, a macrame wall hanging with glass beads. You can really be creative when placing these materials together. Keep in mind a modern style is bold yet simple. We’ve highlighted some great ways to create a modern home decor look in your home. Many items can be bought online* and in store, but make sure you take a look at the product and see if you can make it yourself!!
