Perfectly Cozy Popsicle Blanket https://www.andthenhome.com/perfectly-cozy-popsicle-blanket/ Tue, 28 Aug 2018 20:12:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3507 As we enter the final, last hurrah of summer, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. Beside our patio door we have a basket full of blankets that lives there just for nights like these, when its not cold enough to call it a night but there’s definitely a nip in the air. To add that personal touch, and to really celebrate summer,  I made this fun Popsicle inspired patio blanket that’s a perfect addition for my blanket box. No sewing machine needed here; just an iron and some decorative hand stitching. To be honest, I upgraded a $5 fleece blanket that I picked up at big box store but you could easily head to your local fabric store and grab a few yards of fleece if you can’t find one. Add some sheet of felt from the dollar store and some fusible interfacing – you’ve got a custom blanket for under $15! DIY Popsicle Blanket What You’ll Need: A fleece blanket Felt sheets in six colours Brown or burlap ribbon Scissors Paper (for making a template) Fusible interfacing An iron Embroidery thread and needle Cut out a paper template to the size you want your Popsicle to be. It’s easier is you fold the paper in half and draw and cut your template from the fold. This way the Popsicle shape will be even on both sides. Now we can make the first Popsicle. Cut the yellow felt in the whole shape, this will be your base. Cut an orange layer by laying half of the template onto the and half off. When you lay the orange felt on top of the yellow, it should only cover half of the Popsicle. Finally, cut the top blue portion by laying only the top third of your template onto the felt. When layered together, this makes our first Popsicle. For our second Popsicle, cut out a full template in light green felt, like we did for the yellow layer in Popsicle number one. To make the Popsicle bumps, cut out two strips of dark green felt and then round both edges to make semi-circles. These will lay in the centre of the Popsicle, side by side. For our last Popsicle, cut out a full pink template and then a half template in yellow. Lay the yellow half on top of the pink and your done. To make the Popsicle sticks, cut out three lengths of ribbon and then round of one end. Time to assemble all the pieces! This step takes some time, it’s not difficult but setting each layer takes patience. Cut out pieces of fusible interfacing (this can be purchased at any fabric store, it is a heat activated adhesive for fabric) to match each of the felt Popsicle pieces and the sticks. Use an iron (follow the directions for heat setting, but be sure to turn of the steam) to attach each piece of felt together. Attach the sticks directly to the blanket, this will determine where the Popsicle’s will be so space it out before you iron them down. Once the sticks are in place, attach the Popsicle’s in place. Add some stitches around the Popsicle edges in coloured threads for an added touch. And it’s done! Curl up on the patio with a good book and make the most of the last few weeks of summer. Enjoy! True North Bookends for Canada Day https://www.andthenhome.com/canada-day-bookends/ Fri, 29 Jun 2018 13:00:38 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1805 Bookends add a charming detail to any room and we have a TON of books. I’m a fan of the classics like Jane Austen and the Bronte Sisters. I also love modern historical fiction (Philippa Gregory is one of my favs) and pretty much any biography. We actually still have an old encyclopedia collection, it’s outdated but its beautiful and looks great on our bookshelves. As a collector of books and hoarder of craft supplies making seasonal bookends is a natural fit! I am officially inspired and will defiantly be making bookends for other holidays going forward. This design will take a couple hours to complete but will add a big patriotic statement just in time for July 1st. Canada Day Bookends What You’ll Need: Scrap wood pieces or a solid block of wood (you need something about 5” x 5”) Wood glue Paint pens in black and red White and black paint Sandpaper Graphite transfer paper Pencil Design template – click here for True and here for North Step One: Firstly, paint the wood pieces with a base coat in black paint and let dry Once the black paint is dry, cover it completely with a coat of white paint. Let this layer dry. Take the sandpaper and lightly sand away the white layer of paint in some spots, creating a distressed effect, try to use a light hand when sanding so that the black layer of paint doesn’t get sanded off too. Step Two: Secondly, use the graphite paper and a pencil to transfer the design onto the face of your bookends. You could use your own design or freehand anything you like here too Colour in the design using the paint pens Step Three: Finally, assemble two wood pieces to create an L shape. Add a third piece to make a front face for the design to go on. You could also use a solid wood block if you have one (I had these little wood plaques in my stash so decided to use them up) Place the bookends on your shelf and have a great weekend celebrating Canada’s 150!! You can make any shape you like, we created some cute lips, a moustache, glasses, some words, martini glasses and more!   Making these Bachelorette Selfie Photo Booth Props is easy to do, here’s how! Start by picking some firm cardstock as your base, you can use paper as an accent to your props, but the base should be strong enough to stand without curving.  Once you’ve picked your colours, draw your shapes onto it and cut them out.  Glue any overlapping pieces, for example the sparkly “martini” in the martini glass.  Add any embellishments such as washi tape, gems or stickers.  Once all glue is dry, use tape to attach the stick to the prop.   Your #selfie’s will be memorable and hilarious with these photo props!  They will definitely lasting memories.  There’s many more options then what you see here and when you make them yourself you’re sure to have enough for everyone.   If you love these photo props, check out our DIY Photo Props for photo booths at wedding, birthdays and more.

Home Decor Trend – Stylish Fringed Mirror https://www.andthenhome.com/stylish-fringed-mirror/ https://www.andthenhome.com/stylish-fringed-mirror/#comments Mon, 16 Apr 2018 06:20:29 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3094 Fringe is in and in a big way. Its one of the hottest trends in home decor for 2018. It used to be reserved for blankets and rugs, but not anymore. This year expect to see fringe trim on furniture, lamps and more. Even on mirrors, like this DIY project. It’s a simple craft to put together, although the prep does take some time. And be prepared to vacuum when you’re done! Separating and brushing out the yarn leaves A LOT of lint behind. I used cream yarn with a slight pop of dark green (another hot trend, but more on that later) but of course you can use any colour combination you like. Lets get started: What You’ll Need: Two or more balls of yarn in your colour choice Scissors A mirror Hot glue gun and sticks Hairbrush Cut lengths of yarn about 30 cm (12″) in length. How many you’ll need will depend on the size of mirror you’re using. I cut around 250 strands which was enough for my 12″ mirror. Pull apart each piece of yarn into individual strands. This is not hard but it must be done slowly. If you pull on a strand too hard it will break. Leave one piece of yarn intact for the next step. We’re going to use the yarn that you left in one piece as the base for the fringe. Take about 20 of the pulled apart strands in a bunch. Loop the bunch around the base yarn to create a half-knot. Repeat this until you have a fringe that will cover the entire length of your mirror. Use the hot glue gun to attach the fringe to the back edge of the mirror. It may help to tie a knot in the end as a stopper of sorts, so the yarn doesn’t slip out. Repeat on the opposite side so that the fringe is pulled tight and straight across the mirror front. Gently pull a bristle hairbrush over the fringe to fluff up the yarn.  Cut the bottom o the fringe into the pattern of your choice. I did a layered look, but you could also cut it on a curve or straight across. Hang in your bedroom, entryway or hall for a bold statement piece that will catch everyone’s eye!
