Yarn Wrapped Boho Picture Frame https://www.andthenhome.com/yarn-wrapped-boho-picture-frame/ Tue, 14 May 2019 05:35:04 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4475 Yarn art has been a growing trend for the past few years. Whenever I see these beautiful projects as I scroll through Pinterest or while walking through home décor stores, I really regret not learning how to knit. I did try to learn, but I could never quite pick it up. But since this week we’re covering yarn crafts, I scoured the internet for inspiration. There’s actually a lot of really creative projects of there that don’t require needles. Yarn wrapped, weaved, dyed, knotted – there are so many great techniques available. I decided on a yarn wrapped picture frame. This isn’t my first attempt at yarn wrapping – check out my ombre letters to see that. For this project though, I didn’t even need to shop! I had an old frame in the basement and some yarn scrapes left from another project. The beauty is that’s really all you need. I added beads to mine, but that is totally optional. This is a great way to add texture to your home in such a creative way. This one is easy, but it will take a bit of time so pop on a movie and let’s get started! What you’ll need: An old photo frame Yarn Glue gun and sticks Beads (optional) Start by tying the yarn around one side of the frame and secure with a knot. Don’t worry if it’s not super tight, you can fix that in the end by wrapping over the first strand. Continue wrapping the yarn all around the frame. I left the corners blank, I liked the look (and TBH its easier). Tie another knot in the back of the frame once you’re done. Try to make this knot nice and tight, but if needed you can secure with a spot of hot glue. If you’re going to add beads, look at where you want to place them and remember to thread them onto the yarn in the right spots. When putting the glass and backing back on, you’ll need to glue it in place since we’re covered up the lip of the frame. Make sure you’re happy with the photo you’ve chosen cause you won’t be able to change it once you’ve secured the backing. All done! Happy crafting! Retro and Trendy Tie Dye Tea Towels https://www.andthenhome.com/retro-and-trendy-tie-dye-tea-towels/ Tue, 07 May 2019 03:18:37 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4446 One of the biggest trends popping up this year is – believe it or not – tie dye. To tell the truth I’ve never actually tie dyed anything before so I was bit nervous to give this DIY fad a try. But I decided to give it a go and make some tie dye tea towels and I can now say that there’s nothing to worry about, it’s easier than it looks. Much easier. In fact this whole project (minus dry time) took about 10 mins! There’s a couple of key things to keep in mind – only use natural fabrics as they take the dye waaaay better than man-made fibers, and if you want a bold pattern ignore most tutorials and dip dry fabric into the dye. In my first attempt I tried to dye a wet tea towel but the water soaked up the dye and I ended up with a completely orange tea towel. I couldn’t be happier with my second attempt though! I LOVE the bright bold colour and unique patterns that emerged. Another great thing about this technique is that no two towels will ever look the same, you get a new pattern every time. They would definitely make great gifts (Mother’s Day right around the corner…) and since you can do them in any colour under the sun, you can easily personalize them to anyone’s kitchen. This is a DIY I will encourage anyone to try – please share your projects with us, we’d love to see it! What you’ll need: Plain white cotton tea towels Fabric dye Gloves Elastic bands Bucket Fold your tea towels. For the first towel, I folded it in a wide accordion (about 4”), then starting at the bottom, fold up into a triangle. Continue making triangles until the entire towel is folded. Don’t worry if the triangle isn’t perfect! Secure with elastics (or in my case twine – I forgot to pick up elastics) 🙂 For the second towel, I folded it in a slimmer accordion (about 2”) and left it in a long rope shape. Secure with elastics. Dip the towels one at a time into the dye (wearing gloves). Dip one side and then flip and dip the other side. I held the towels in the dye for about a minute or so. Don’t fully submerge the towel – dip it in and let the dye run through the folds. Let the towels sit folded for about 10 mins and then remove the elastics. Spread them out on a drop cloth or clothes line to dry and you’re done! Check our list of tie dye projects for more inspiration. Hope you had fun tie dying and happy crafting! Faux Marble Deer Head – Transformed https://www.andthenhome.com/faux-marble-deer-head-transformed/ Tue, 15 Jan 2019 05:05:08 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4024 There are always projects that we make and then realize maybe there’s something missing or perhaps something changes, like the season. If you get creative, transforming old pieces to new can be really rewarding. Besides being super useful, re-purposed items can become even better than they were before. And being environmentally friendly doesn’t hurt either. To help inspire you and get you started, we’ve up-cycled one of our Christmas projects. We originally made this faux marble deer head back in November and the first step here is to make it too – that is if you haven’t done it already! Find the instructions here. Finished? Great! Onto the next steps for a brand new faux deer head … All you’ll need for this transformation is a glue gun and an assortment of flowers. Decide on your layout and then start gluing the flowers into place. And that’s all it takes! With the flowers, this newly flowered deer head is ideal for bedrooms and nurseries but could really fit in anywhere.

Up-cycled Dollar Store Trash Can https://www.andthenhome.com/up-cycled-dollar-store-trash-can/ Tue, 08 Jan 2019 12:00:05 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2227 New Year, New Decor! The New Year is all about resolutions and fresh starts so this week we’re focusing on refreshing items to give them new life. Take this $1 garbage bin that was hanging around our bathroom. Its not the prettiest thing I’ve ever brought home so it’s time to give it a face lift. Since our master bath has a bit of a nautical theme, I decided on twine, navy and anchors. This entire project will take less than an hour to complete but you’ll be happy with results. Feel free to experiment with the theme and remember to share your results with us in the comments section! There are two designs here, mostly because I started one and then changed my mind about it. That’s okay though, half the fun of DIY is trail and error! What you’ll need: A cheap trash can Sisal rope Fabric Hot glue gun and sticks Stencil (optional) Paint (optional) Pouncer or makeup sponge (optional)   Use the hot glue to make a line down the can to attach the fabric. Continue around the whole can is covered. Attach the sisal rope around the bottom of the can, wrapping it around and around. Make sure you start and end on the same side of the can so the end bits are hidden in the back. Repeat the same thing at the top of the can. This would be the end of this design…except I didn’t love it. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I didn’t think it would really work in the space. So, I kept going… And covered the patterned fabric up with some navy fabric. And then stencilled on an anchor. This was the version that I decided to use is our bathroom. I’m happy with how it looks, better than the colourful circles! Try our Upgraded Dollar Store Mosaic Vase for more up-cycling crafting.   Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links.  There may be a small commission made by our recommendations, and/or link to products mentioned or services on this website.  Your purchase will help us continue to bring you amazing content, step-by-steps and product reviews.

Trendy Colour Block Fall Pitcher https://www.andthenhome.com/trendy-colour-block-fall-pitcher/ Tue, 02 Oct 2018 04:39:00 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3690 Whether your serving cocktails, lemonade or water at your next gathering, make sure you drinks are presented in style. And since on Home Beautiful’s list of the hottest fall decor trends for 2018 are blue, gold and bold shapes, I incorporated those designs into a DIY pitcher that’s oh so perfectly in vogue.  So let’s get out the paint and invite a few friends over for drinks! Trendy Colour Block Fall Pitcher What You’ll Need: Plain pitcher Navy and gold multi-surface paint Paint brush Sealer Masking tape Tape off a large triangle on the bottom half of the pitcher. Be sure to press the edges of the tape down during this craft to make a tight seal. Fill in the triangle with the navy paint. This will most likely need more than one coat, make sure to let the paint dry completely between layers. Once the paint is dry, remove the tape from around the blue triangle. Add some more tape to form a reverse triangle pointing down from the top of the pitcher. This triangle will be a line, as opposed to being filled in, so add a second line of tape to create a channel. Fill in the line with gold paint, making sure the paint dries completely between coats. Finally, finish with a food safe sealer and serve those drinks in style. We hope you liked this trendy colour block fall pitcher!  Looking for more home decor ideas?  Certainly check out these poolside Beach Decor – DIY Flip Flop Hangers or this Macrame Wall Hanger for Beginners.
