Faux Marble Deer Head – Transformed https://www.andthenhome.com/faux-marble-deer-head-transformed/ Tue, 15 Jan 2019 05:05:08 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4024 There are always projects that we make and then realize maybe there’s something missing or perhaps something changes, like the season. If you get creative, transforming old pieces to new can be really rewarding. Besides being super useful, re-purposed items can become even better than they were before. And being environmentally friendly doesn’t hurt either. To help inspire you and get you started, we’ve up-cycled one of our Christmas projects. We originally made this faux marble deer head back in November and the first step here is to make it too – that is if you haven’t done it already! Find the instructions here. Finished? Great! Onto the next steps for a brand new faux deer head … All you’ll need for this transformation is a glue gun and an assortment of flowers. Decide on your layout and then start gluing the flowers into place. And that’s all it takes! With the flowers, this newly flowered deer head is ideal for bedrooms and nurseries but could really fit in anywhere.

Remembrance Day Craft – Elegant Button Poppy https://www.andthenhome.com/remembrance-day-craft-elegant-button-poppy/ Mon, 29 Oct 2018 14:05:41 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=369 As Halloween comes to a close and Christmas is on it’s way, we prepare to observe Veterans Day in the US and Remembrance Day for fellow Canadians.  It makes November a quiet and impactful month with some major decor possibilities.  You can change your pillow covers, place some paper poppies in a vase on the mantel, wear a felt poppy or hang some Veterans Day or Remembrance Day art.  The last one brings us to today’s project, a Remembrance Day Craft – Elegant Button Poppy.  So, in honour of Remembrance Day the girls and I (well, mostly I) made an Elegant Button Poppy Art that we can hang on our wall.  This craft is an easy one and yet looks professional, which is what you want from your DIY home decor projects.  My middlest daughter, who is just over 3 years, had a fun time creating her version of the craft while I worked hard on mine.  It didn’t take us long and we both had fun.  Here is a preview of what we came up with…     I placed mine in a black frame and added a light green card stock mat to finish it off.  This piece looks great on the wall or on the mantel.  Pair it with other red decor pieces like vases, flowers or cylinders.  This picture will also fit right in with any rustic or vintage decor for the month of November, consider using a wooden frame. Let’s take a look at the easy step-by-step.     Remembrance Day Craft – Elegant Button Poppy The goods:   – 8×10 piece of white bristol board – red buttons – red embellishments (I used some red jewels) – black sequins – green paint – glue – black sharpie (or paint pen) – paint brush   Optional – frame                  – card stock for mat       Intructions   1.  Place a few drops of glue in on the white bristol board where you want the center of the poppy to be.  Add the black sequins.     2.  Arrange the red buttons and embellishments on the board in a pattern that you are happy with, creating 4 petals.  When you are happy with the arrangement add a small amount of glue to each button/embellishment.   Almost done your DIY Poppy Decor! 3.  Being careful not to disturb the red buttons, paint a small green stem from the center of the poppy.  Be sure to leave a space large enough to write a saying or quote that represents Remembrance Day for you (this could even be a name).  Continue to paint the rest of the stem.  Add two leaves along the base of the stem.  Set aside to allow drying.     4.  Once dry you can add your saying, name or quote to the space in between the stem using the sharpie/paint pen.     5.  If you decide to frame your work, measure and cut a piece of card stock for the mat and place them inside the frame.     Viola!  A beautiful craft to help honour this special day.  Get your children involved along side or with the main event, they will love making this art!!  If you’re looking for more Remembrance Day crafts take a look at our Felt Poppy.   Need supplies?  Here’s where you can start* *Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links.  There may be a small commission made by our recommendations, and/or link to products mentioned or services on this website.  Any potential purchase you make will help us continue to bring you amazing content, step-by-steps and product reviews.  Products are not exact to what we use, be sure these materials are right for you!

Perfectly Cozy Popsicle Blanket https://www.andthenhome.com/perfectly-cozy-popsicle-blanket/ Tue, 28 Aug 2018 20:12:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3507 As we enter the final, last hurrah of summer, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. Beside our patio door we have a basket full of blankets that lives there just for nights like these, when its not cold enough to call it a night but there’s definitely a nip in the air. To add that personal touch, and to really celebrate summer,  I made this fun Popsicle inspired patio blanket that’s a perfect addition for my blanket box. No sewing machine needed here; just an iron and some decorative hand stitching. To be honest, I upgraded a $5 fleece blanket that I picked up at big box store but you could easily head to your local fabric store and grab a few yards of fleece if you can’t find one. Add some sheet of felt from the dollar store and some fusible interfacing – you’ve got a custom blanket for under $15! DIY Popsicle Blanket What You’ll Need: A fleece blanket Felt sheets in six colours Brown or burlap ribbon Scissors Paper (for making a template) Fusible interfacing An iron Embroidery thread and needle Cut out a paper template to the size you want your Popsicle to be. It’s easier is you fold the paper in half and draw and cut your template from the fold. This way the Popsicle shape will be even on both sides. Now we can make the first Popsicle. Cut the yellow felt in the whole shape, this will be your base. Cut an orange layer by laying half of the template onto the and half off. When you lay the orange felt on top of the yellow, it should only cover half of the Popsicle. Finally, cut the top blue portion by laying only the top third of your template onto the felt. When layered together, this makes our first Popsicle. For our second Popsicle, cut out a full template in light green felt, like we did for the yellow layer in Popsicle number one. To make the Popsicle bumps, cut out two strips of dark green felt and then round both edges to make semi-circles. These will lay in the centre of the Popsicle, side by side. For our last Popsicle, cut out a full pink template and then a half template in yellow. Lay the yellow half on top of the pink and your done. To make the Popsicle sticks, cut out three lengths of ribbon and then round of one end. Time to assemble all the pieces! This step takes some time, it’s not difficult but setting each layer takes patience. Cut out pieces of fusible interfacing (this can be purchased at any fabric store, it is a heat activated adhesive for fabric) to match each of the felt Popsicle pieces and the sticks. Use an iron (follow the directions for heat setting, but be sure to turn of the steam) to attach each piece of felt together. Attach the sticks directly to the blanket, this will determine where the Popsicle’s will be so space it out before you iron them down. Once the sticks are in place, attach the Popsicle’s in place. Add some stitches around the Popsicle edges in coloured threads for an added touch. And it’s done! Curl up on the patio with a good book and make the most of the last few weeks of summer. Enjoy! We hope you loved this DIY Popsicle Blanket!  Looking for more home decor?  Certainly check out this Beach Decor DIY Flip Flop Hanger or our Tie Dye Tea Towels. Lawn Dominoes for Summer Fun https://www.andthenhome.com/lawn-dominoes-for-summer-fun/ https://www.andthenhome.com/lawn-dominoes-for-summer-fun/#comments Tue, 15 May 2018 03:31:08 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3202 With summer upon us, its time to turn our attention to the outdoors. Earlier this week, Christine brought us a list of tricks and tips to help make your next camping trip with the kids an amazing one. If you found that post helpful, then you’ll love this easy DIY. Lawn dominoes are perfect for camping, backyards, BBQ’s and for kids and adults alike.  Let’s get started…. Cut 28 pieces of wood. You can either cut them from a length of building planks from a hardware store or buy pre-cut pieces of wood from a craft store. Use a few different colours and spray paint the planks.  For this step you  have a couple choices. If you have a punch, cut some dots from some thin craft foam. I highly recommend using a punch for this step, using scissors will take too long and be very difficult.  When using a punch, avoid buying anything with an adhesive backing.  The glue will get stuck in the punch and will make it difficult to use. The foam will be water resistant and is a good choice for the outdoors. If you would rather use paper, you will have to seal the planks after attaching the dots, otherwise the paper won’t survive he elements. The last option is to paint the dots onto the planks. Using some acrylic paint and a stencil, paint all of the dots in place. If you opted to paint on your dots, you can skip this step. Otherwise, glue all of those dots into place.   Done and done! With summer upon us, its time to turn our attention to the outdoors.

Pro tip: Store and carry the dominoes in a laundry bag from the dollar store!

We hope you liked these lawn dominoes.  Looking for an amazing recipe for your summer BBQ’s?  Certainly try these delicious Campfire Cupcakes!

Think “Glamping”– Or a least, don’t rough it.  Be sure you can drive your car to your site and if it’s your first time going with your young kids, consider renting a bunkie or yurt.  It doesn’t hurt to have the camp fire experience…and then sleep in a bed! Routine as normal– Try to adhere to your routine if you can.  This is especially true if you have very young kids.  When we went with our then one year old, we encouraged nap time at her regular time and I insisted on both girls having a shower and in their jam’s at the regular time.  Dry run– If you’re tenting it, do some practice runs in the backyard or even the living room for the first time.  Get them use to sleeping on fold out cots or air mattresses with ‘tent noises’, cooler nights and warmer mornings. Arrive early– Arrive as early as the grounds will allow, this will give you time to set up with daylight.  Don’t forget to have the kids help!  They can help with the tent, set their bed up and gather sticks for the fire. Pack for weather– Remember that the nights can be cool, so bring sweaters and warm pants.  Don’t forget rain gear too.   TRICKS Ziplock bags –Pack a variety of sizes and use them for dirty clothes, keeping items dry (matches and fire related items), bundling items together and keeping trinkets the kids find.  We have a rock collector in our home.  Be sure to bring at least one large freezer ziplock for all of your valuables, phones, wallets etc. which can be easier to keep track of and will keep sand out. Kids Birthday Party Theme Idea: Dinosaur Birthday https://www.andthenhome.com/kids-birthday-party-theme-idea-dinosaur-birthday/ Wed, 25 Apr 2018 12:34:57 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3134 We recently had the pleasure of attending a dinosaur themed kids birthday party and wow did they have some cute and easy ways to make the theme come to life.  This Kids Birthday Party Theme Idea: Dinosaur Birthday was for a four year old girl.  All of the kids enjoyed the fun elements that were there including balloons, wall art, themed food and more.  My daughter (also four) even got some of the ‘jokes’.  So, if you have a Dino lovin’ child and want to easily give them a roaring birthday, read on!  The birthday was held at an indoor play place that is local to us.  If you have one near you I highly recommend them for birthday parties.  The kids have so much fun and there’s less stress for mom and dad.  Most establishments allow you to bring in your own (peanut free) food, snacks and cake.  The play place close to us includes two large pizza’s and drinking boxes, which is extra nice.  Decorate your room as you see fit and quickly tear down when your done and thats it!  That being said, let’s get to it! The tables were set with bright pinks and purples, no doubt the birthday girls favourite colours.  Cups, plates, napkins and cutlery all in those colours also.  Tied to chairs and placed on tables were pink, purple and dinosaur shaped helium balloons.   One of my favourite elements was the dinosaur head fruit bowl!  A watermelon was carefully cut and carved into a T-rex head.  To do this all you need to do is cut a rectangle shaped piece out of the watermelon, set this aside as you’ll need it for the teeth.  Then carefully scoop out the inside.  Use a melon baller to do this and place the balls aside, this way you can reuse them.  Cut triangle teeth out of the rectangle piece placed aside previously.  Secure them around the ‘mouth’ as seen in the picture, white pulp facing out, with toothpicks.  Finally, the eyes are made of a small white marshmallow and a blueberry on a toothpick. Fun food! The food was delightfully labeled with bright bristol board.  My daughter had a laugh at the funny food labels, “Dino spikes” were watermelon and “Dino eggs” were donut holes!  I thought this was a very cute and easy way to add to the dinosaur theme. In lieu of a traditional birthday cake there were Dino-pop’s offered.  All the kids seemed to like the cake pops because it was something a little different.  Sticking to the colour theme, they were pink and purple and oh-so cute. Loving this themed birthday party?  See our Curious George Birthday Party. The favours were dinosaur eggs.  These were purchased from the local dollar store and were the PERFECT favour for a Dino party!  They were displayed in a little nest with a sign that said “Pick and egg and take me home.  Place me in water and wait 24hrs for my egg to break, then watch me grow”.  There were bags for the kids to put their eggs in to take home.  The nest was made using a twig wreath, with twine wrapped around for extra effect! So that’s the awesome Dinosaur Themed Birthday Party we attended!  A great birthday party idea! I hope you got some great ideas for your Dino-fan’s birthday party!  If you have any other ideas, certainly share them in the comments so everyone can create the perfect party for their dinosaur loving kids!

DIY Magic Monster Spray https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-magic-monster-spray/ Fri, 09 Mar 2018 02:36:23 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3019 It happened.  My middlest daughter is afraid of monsters.  Our first never had a problem sleeping in her own room, never had nightmares, doesn’t need a nightlight and I’m pretty sure doesn’t even care about monsters let alone sees them.  But our poor middle child has let them in.  So, in a struggle to help her sleep better we created some very special, very powerful DIY Magic Monster Spray with essential oils.  Thank goodness it worked! The first night she mentioned monsters she was full of tears and fear.  She was in such a state I had to take her downstairs to get her attention off of the monsters that were coming through her door.  I definitely didn’t want to see her go through this again so the next day we created some Magic Monster Spray.   That night we went through our normal bedtime routine and as she was getting into bed I mentioned the monsters. She remembered the Magic Monster Spray and seemed relieved already.  I explained again that it’s a magic spray that will not let any monsters into her room.  Then I asked her where the monsters were getting in, she pointed at the door.  We went there first, I let her spray the door.  Her sister (who shares a room with her) sprayed the windows, and I sprayed the closet.  The smile on her face was so big, I too felt better.  We continue to spray every night. Here’s the recipe I used: DIY Magic Monster Spray What you’ll need: Plastic spray bottle Distilled water Sparkles or gem stones Lavender essential oil Stickers What you’ll need to do: This Monster Spray is so easy to do.  First, stick your stickers onto the bottle.  Then all you have to do is put the ingredients into the bottle.  Start with the water then add some gem stones and finally a couple drops of essential oil.  Give the bottle a swirl before each use.    The essential oils give a fragrance to let their imagination think it’s definitely working, if they can smell it…the monsters can too right?  The gems are just for fun, my daughter is obsessed with sparkly things so it works for her.  And the label is just to make it seem legit.  They will check it out, even if they can’t read, trust me!   If you liked this DIY Monster Spray with essential oils you might like these Beaded Wind Chimes Kids Craft Idea and these cute Handprint and Footprint Easter Art Ideas from our sister site Champagne and Sugarplums. *Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links.  There may be a small commission made by our recommendations, and/or link to products mentioned or services on this website.  Any potential purchase you make will help us continue to bring you amazing content, step-by-steps and product reviews.  Products are not exact to what we use, be sure these materials are right for you!
