Top Outdoor Halloween Decor Ideas! https://www.andthenhome.com/top-outdoor-halloween-decor-ideas/ Tue, 23 Oct 2018 02:01:20 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3756 I love to see my neighbours Halloween (and soon Christmas) decorations and displays.  Some displays are simply a pumpkin with some straw or corn husks while others go above and beyond with elaborate mechanical skeletons and ghosts.  In the past I have always used my pumpkin topiary with a few real pumpkins thrown in but recently I’ve been wanting to do something a little more fun.   There are many ways to decorate your home for halloween, but the one thing that looks the best is consistency!  It needs to flow.  You can achieve that by using the same type of decor,  colour or theme.  And don’t forget, less can be more!  I’m going to show you some of the top Halloween decorating tips that I found during my searching, so stay with me.  There’s going to be some spooky birds, ghoulish ghosts and glowing lanterns. Let’s get into the Top Outdoor Halloween Decor Ideas!     First up is this eerie Raven Inspired Halloween Porch by Create, Craft, Love.  This outdoor halloween decor really caught my eye because it’s simple yet impactful!  You can find the ravens at your local dollar store and the branches from your backyard or walking path, the black and white pumpkins are a perfect addition and if you don’t want to spend the money at the craft store, spray paint some real ones.  This one is also very easy and inexpensive to create but looks fantastic on the front lawn.  And really, it’s all you need to decorate your home!  Outdoor halloween decor can’t get better then this.  You could add some black eyes to these ghosty faces, or leave them with none to give an extra creepy vibe.  See Listotic for these ghosts and more. This one is great for kids and adults alike.  Turn a simple gourd into a ghoulish ghost!!  Very cute, super easy and halloween effective.  This project gets an A+ for meeting all the important criteria for those on the go.  These gourds are perfect to transform the outdoor decor you already had for fall.  See how to make these ghosty gourds by House of Hawthornes here. Loving the list?  There’s more Top Outdoor Halloween Decor Ideas! I love this set up!  The white DIY ghost in the background finishes off the black and white props on the table.  The black caged skull is perfectly placed with minimal effort.  This is what I was talking about when I mentioned having a theme, all of the items go together, creating a high end look!  Check out the DIY tutorial at DIY Show Off here. This one is from Pinterest, there are a couple others too, but this one really stood out for me.  It’s super creepy because all of the elements work together.  The old rusted wheel barrel, weathered shovel and matching lantern all help to make this outdoor halloween display come to life.  Adding some leaves and browning long grass around the skulls keep it realistic…and by using only skulls and not bones, it tells a story!  Love this! Let’s not forget a lighted pathway!  This look is mysterious or enchanting, however you want to view it.  It’s an easy way to light up your home for halloween.  Add some hay bails and some pumpkins and your all set for halloween night.  Be sure to use battery operated ‘candles’ for this project!  See the easy tutorial by And Then Home here. DIY Wooden Porch Pumpkin Home Decor https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-wooden-porch-pumpkin-home-decor/ Tue, 04 Sep 2018 20:47:25 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3531 So, the time has come again….summer fun is fading, the days are noticeably shorter and the weather is cooler.  BUT, this means we can welcome all of the fun fall decor!!  Fall could be one of the best time for crafters and DIY’ers because we get to use materials, colours and themes we wouldn’t usually.  Today I’m cracking out…and at some wood logs that I conveniently got from my neighbour.  You can use any wooden log for this craft as long as it has a flat end to stand it on.  On that note, let’s take a look on how to create a DIY Wooden Porch Pumpkin Home Decor As I was saying, any log will do if it can stand by itself.  The sturdier the better, so it doesn’t fall down easily, especially if you intend on having it on your porch like mine.  You also want to pick a log that has bark that will peel off easier, this just makes life easier and also won’t damage the underlying wood.  Removing the bark is the hardest part of this project and the most tedious.  Once the bark has been removed, it’s a matter of sanding down the rough parts.  Any knots are good because it gives the project a natural look, which is nice.   When the log is smooth and sanded you can begin to paint it.  I used an orange paint because…Fall.  I actually used three different colours for this project to create some depth and character but it would look just as nice with one colour. Read on for the DIY Wooden Porch Pumpkin Home Decor tutorial! What you’ll need: Three wooden logs, bark removed A small branch cut into three (2-3inch pcs) to use as stumps Glue  Sand paper Chisel or Flat head screwdriver Orange paint (one to three shades) White paint Paint brushes Finishing spray Embellishments (ribbon, burlap, etc) Step 1.  First step is to peel the bark off of the log.  A chisel is best for this (although I only had a flat head screw driver that worked nicely too).  The bark can be a little stubborn so be careful!  Also, it’s a lot messy so be prepared for that too. Step 2.  Sanding.  Sand all the areas down so it’s smooth, a little time consuming but worth it. Step 3. Now to paint.  Paint each log orange first.  You can use different shades for each log, or the same like I did.  When the orange paint has dried completely, add a layer of white.  Once the white paint has dried, take your sandpaper and gently rub it over the log.  You will see that some of the orange paint starts to peak through.  Rub as little or as much as you’d like! Step 4.  Glue your small ‘stumps’ onto the top of each log.  This will create the pumpkin stump and give a finished look to the project!  It really does make a difference. Step 5.  Sealer.  I used a spray sealer with a little shine to it.  Give it two coats, allowing them to dry in between.  Step 6. Add some twine, string, ribbon or burlap to the top.  You can also add some metal pieces, a trend we are seeing this year is different types of materials being used in fall decor! Ta-Da!  Your DIY Wooden Porch Pumpkin Home Decor is finished. That’s it!  Your fall decor is ready for your front porch, mantel or office.  This DIY fall home decor project is definitely one of my favourites, it was fun to make with a bit of a challenge to it.  Taking a piece from a raw condition and creating a decor piece was definitely worth it. Clark Kent – Superman  What you’ll need – suit with a white dress shirt (preferably), a superman t-shirt, thick rimmed glasses.  Be sure to expose your superman suit at the right moment! Little Miss Muffet What you’ll need – a cute dress, an apron, make-up and a wig (if you like) and of certainly a spider friend. Zombie What you’ll need – a ton of make-up is absolutely needed to make this costume work well.  We’re talking fake skin, fillers and fake blood.  Add some old clothes that you don’t mind mucking up and you’re set!   Skull  What you’ll need – white face paint with some black make up should do the trick.  Add some colour if you like, but keeping the contrast here really makes the look ‘pop’.  Adding a scary accessory to your hair finishes this costume up perfectly. And a few couples costumes! Jack and Jill What you’ll need -for Jack you’ll need a bloody head wrap made of some bandage material, a plaid shirt and some white bib overalls.  White will show the dirt and fake blood better since Jack has a fall and ‘breaks his crown’.  For Jill a white apron to show that she went “tumbling after”, some piggy tails and a tin bucket as a prop. Little Red Riding Hood and The Big Bad Wolf What you’ll need – the Big Bad Wolf will need some make up and some fake teeth, an outfit can simply be a dark coloured dress shirt and pants.  Little Red needs her signature red cloak and if you really want to have fun with it, using make-up and a contact lens to achieve a scratch from the Big Bad Wolf makes for an awesome twist on this couples costume. There you have it!  Some pretty awesome costumes that are fairly simple, yet very impressive!  A special thank you to my friend Sarah for sharing her costume ideas and And Then Home’s ever creative Victoria and husband M! Life gets busy and before we know it the annual Halloween Party is days away!  I’ll admit it, I spend too much time decorating my house and not enough time on my Halloween Costume.  This year, I’ve put together some great Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas that I think you’ll love.
My friends and I usually have a Halloween Party every year, it’s an excuse to get together, drink some drinks, eat food we shouldn’t and have a laugh.  The costumes are of course the highlight of the night.  We have seen witches, ghosts, pirates, ware wolves and even Homer Simpson pass through our house.  The costumes vary in effort year to year, sometimes we’ve planned the costume for months and others it’s a quick clothes change.

Let’s take a look at some Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas

Spooky Black Cat
Halloween Costume Ideas
What you’ll need – Make-up is key for this one, spending extra time on creating a cat like face will go a long way.  You’ll also need some black clothes, and cat ears. Add some eyelashes too for extra flair.

Scarecrow

What you’ll need – Some straw, plaid shirt, jeans, squares of plaid fabric, a straw hat, make-up, and to top this outfit off – a fake crow!

Fun and Festive Halloween Garland Craft https://www.andthenhome.com/fun-festive-halloween-garland-craft/ Fri, 20 Oct 2017 23:51:13 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2486 I have this big beautiful fireplace in my living room that is begging for a Fun and Festive Halloween Garland Craft.  The mantel is looking pretty good with my purple cat and “Boo” sign, but the front definitely a little bare.  So I rounded up the kids and together we made an awesome halloween garland to hang across the mantel and it looks oh so cute!   To make these fun little characters I used ribbon, beads for the eyes, pipe cleaners, hot glue gun and styrofoam balls.  I already had a bunch of ribbon on hand, but if you don’t a quick trip to the local craft or even dollar store won’t take long.  This garland would also work nicely with bats and ghosts.  You could replace the mummies and spiders or add to it with extra characters!  Googly eyes would also be a fun touch too.  Play with it and see what you can come up with!   Here’s how to make this Fun Halloween Garland Craft Fancy Pumpkin This on requires some orange tinsel ribbon that I had in my craft stock.  This type of ribbon makes the pumpkin stand out and gives it some character.  To achieve this fancy pumpkin simply wrap the ribbon around the styrofoam ball, using some hot glue to stick in in place.  I added some sequinned ribbon to make it sparkle, cause who doesn’t love sparkle?!  And some green pipe cleaner glued into the top for a stem.  The pipe cleaner also works as a hook for to attach to the garland. Spooky Spider This guy was made by gluing some black ribbon around a styrofoam ball and adding pipe cleaners (two per side should do it) for legs.  Two small beads are glued in place for the eyes.  My girls enjoyed sticking the legs in and seeing the spider come to life!  Of course you will want any glue to be dry and cool before handing it to your little ones. Wrapped Mummy   Finally our mummy.  Made with two styrofoam balls with white ribbon glued this wrapped mummy finishes this garland nicely.  Be sure to wrap in a horizontal direction, cutting the ribbon where needed.  Once you have two styrofoam balls wrapped, use a pipe cleaner with hot glue to attach them together, adding a piece of ribbon dangling in the middle for arms.  Add two small beads for eyes. All the these festive characters are then added to a string or twine that you can hang on your mantel.  This garland is fun for the kids, whether they are creating it or seeing the finished product already hung!  If you love this craft check out our Top Outdoor Halloween Decorations or this DIY Cork Pumpkin.
