Both should reflect you and your personality, your aesthetic should always shine through. But with so many options out there, it can help to know what’s trending so you can focus your choices and keep a strategy in mind. That’s why we’ve assembled this list of Top Ten Christmas Decor Trends for 2018 for inspiration. Rainbow Trees Predicted to be the biggest trend this season, this colourful look is sure to make a statement. You can easily create this design by picking up a few boxes of different coloured ornaments. A great tip from www.housebeautiful.com, keep in mind you’ll need more boxes of the colour on the bottom of the tree as it gets wider on the way down. 2. Wicker Tree Skirts The absolutely perfect way to cover the worst bit of your tree. This collar covers up not only the trunk but also the never attractive water basin. You can get one in any colour you like, from white to dark brown, so they suit any palette. Christmas Decor 3. 80’s Vintage Oh the 80’s. A decade where our Christmas’ were filled with tinsel, multi-coloured foil stars, glass ornaments that shattered if you breathed on them and false trees so sparse they looked like they were attacked by termites. But despite all of this, or maybe because of it, you just can’t beat the nostalgic feeling of having a few of these kicking around the house. This must be why 80’s vintage is making such a huge comeback this year, with stores like Michaels even coming out with an entire vintage inspired collection. Pick up some vintage decor here. 4. Mother Nature Natural elements have been a part of Christmas decorating since the beginning of, well, Christmas decorating. It all started with evergreen wreaths, berry garlands and pinecone ornaments.  This isn’t a trend that is going anywhere anytime soon and we can’t say we’re sad about that. 5. Warm Golden Lights In recent years, since the LED bulb came onto the market, the trend in lighting has been icy whites with bold, electric colours. This year that will flip as we see a swing back to warm, golden tones. The glow from these lights will bathe your home in warmth and splendor. But don’t worry! You won’t have to go back to eco-unfriendly incandescent bulbs to get this look. 6. Barely There Christmas Not for everyone, this hot trend is sweeping the decor world. If you can resist hauling all of your decorations from storage, this look can deliver a clean, crisp and modern Christmas. Our friends at A Crafted Passion have eleven inspirational strategies to get you started. 7. DIY Advents Anyone remember those cardboard calendars with the not-so-great little chocolates in them? While those are still hanging around, the trend for 2018 is to make your own. There are unlimited tutorials out there – including our own. Options range from chalkboards, to felt, to wood boxes and everything in-between. There’s even kits that make it that much easier to get started – you can find some here.  8. Plaid Stockings The great thing about this easy trend is  you can pick up these beauties pretty much anywhere. Because they are so popular this year, every store from the local Dollar Store to Pottery Barn has them in-stock and ready to buy. Don’t wait too long though or they’ll be gone! 9. Folklore Inspired by the Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) decorating trend, this Christmas style is sitting front and centre in 2018. Hygge – in a very basic sense – is the Scandinavian concept of feeling cozy contentment and well-being through simple things. With how crazy the world is feeling today, it’s no wonder this concept is so popular. Think candles, blankets, cocoa, and even sweatpants. Its not only about decor, its also a state of mind. 10. Pink I’m dreaming of a Pink Christmas!! Say yes to this fun colour we don’t normally associate with the holidays. Think pink lights, ornaments, wreaths, dare we say… a pink tree?? While that might be pushing most of us past our comfort zones, don’t be afraid to add touches of this trendy colour to your decor strategy. Perhaps try starting with out funky pink photo box pictured above? Get the tutorial here. We hope you found this list of Christmas Decor helpful and that you feel inspired to mix something new into your holiday decor this year! However you decorate your home, we hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

Perfectly Cozy Popsicle Blanket https://www.andthenhome.com/perfectly-cozy-popsicle-blanket/ Tue, 28 Aug 2018 20:12:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3507 As we enter the final, last hurrah of summer, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. Beside our patio door we have a basket full of blankets that lives there just for nights like these, when its not cold enough to call it a night but there’s definitely a nip in the air. To add that personal touch, and to really celebrate summer,  I made this fun Popsicle inspired patio blanket that’s a perfect addition for my blanket box. No sewing machine needed here; just an iron and some decorative hand stitching. To be honest, I upgraded a $5 fleece blanket that I picked up at big box store but you could easily head to your local fabric store and grab a few yards of fleece if you can’t find one. Add some sheet of felt from the dollar store and some fusible interfacing – you’ve got a custom blanket for under $15! DIY Popsicle Blanket What You’ll Need: A fleece blanket Felt sheets in six colours Brown or burlap ribbon Scissors Paper (for making a template) Fusible interfacing An iron Embroidery thread and needle Cut out a paper template to the size you want your Popsicle to be. It’s easier is you fold the paper in half and draw and cut your template from the fold. This way the Popsicle shape will be even on both sides. Now we can make the first Popsicle. Cut the yellow felt in the whole shape, this will be your base. Cut an orange layer by laying half of the template onto the and half off. When you lay the orange felt on top of the yellow, it should only cover half of the Popsicle. Finally, cut the top blue portion by laying only the top third of your template onto the felt. When layered together, this makes our first Popsicle. For our second Popsicle, cut out a full template in light green felt, like we did for the yellow layer in Popsicle number one. To make the Popsicle bumps, cut out two strips of dark green felt and then round both edges to make semi-circles. These will lay in the centre of the Popsicle, side by side. For our last Popsicle, cut out a full pink template and then a half template in yellow. Lay the yellow half on top of the pink and your done. To make the Popsicle sticks, cut out three lengths of ribbon and then round of one end. Time to assemble all the pieces! This step takes some time, it’s not difficult but setting each layer takes patience. Cut out pieces of fusible interfacing (this can be purchased at any fabric store, it is a heat activated adhesive for fabric) to match each of the felt Popsicle pieces and the sticks. Use an iron (follow the directions for heat setting, but be sure to turn of the steam) to attach each piece of felt together. Attach the sticks directly to the blanket, this will determine where the Popsicle’s will be so space it out before you iron them down. Once the sticks are in place, attach the Popsicle’s in place. Add some stitches around the Popsicle edges in coloured threads for an added touch. And it’s done! Curl up on the patio with a good book and make the most of the last few weeks of summer. Enjoy! Four Fabulous (and Easy) Felt Pouches https://www.andthenhome.com/four-fabulous-and-easy-felt-pouches/ Tue, 31 Jul 2018 02:49:29 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3379 Felt pouches are fun, easy and so useful! They can safely store your sunglasses, cards, jewelry, passports, crafting supplies, the uses are endless. Simply size the pouch to whatever you are planning to put in them. This week we’re going to show you four fabulous pouch designs to inspire your creativity. What You’ll Need: Felt Thread and a sewing needle Various decorations Pouch #1 – Pom Poms Galore This pouch uses pom poms for a fun pop of colour! Take two pieces of felt and cut them to the size you need. Lay the two felts against either other, cutting the lining slightly smaller than the outer piece. Fold the bottom third of the felt up to create a pouch. Use some thread to create a ladder stitch on both sides of the felt. Follow this diagram to make this easy, yet impressive stitch: Photo Credit: My Poppet Fold the top half of the pouch down and use some more thread to sew some pom poms along the edge of the flap. Done! DIY Felt Pouches Pouch #2 – Pineapple Persuasion This pouch is made to hold a cell phone safe and sound. Measure your phone against a piece of felt. Fold the felt in half and use a ladder stitch along the open edge and the bottom. Cut a yellow oval and a green stem from a sheet of felt. Sew some small chevrons into the yellow oval to make some pineapple spikes and then use some hot glue to attach the pineapple to the front of the pouch. Complete! It’s really just that easy. Pouch #3 – The Envelope Two stitches is all that’s need here – no joke! Cut two pieces of felt into a square. It can be any size, but it has to be a square for this design to work. This time, leave the two pieces of felt the same size. Working with the square turned towards you to make a diamond, fold two corners in to meet in the middle. Secure with a simple stitch. Fold one more corner to meet the other two, and sew this one to the others. Add a snap to the middle and to the remaining loose corner. TA-DA, a five minute, two stitch pouch. Pouch #4 – Jewel Tones This pouch repeats many of the steps from Pouch #1 but instead of adding pom poms, try adding a brooch or pendant. Makes a great pouch for all of your travel documents – Bon Voyage! Pro Tip – make a few for different trips. Going to the beach – palm trees and sea creatures. Paris – try an Eiffel Tower. DIY Flower Heart New Baby Sign https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-flower-heart-new-baby-sign/ Sun, 25 Feb 2018 16:32:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2979 Is someone you know expecting a baby? Planning to throw a baby shower? Decorating is almost as much fun as the party itself! With this beautiful DIY Flower Heart New Baby Sign you will add a really personal touch to your shower decor. The sample that I made is a bit too small for a shower display. At about 6″ by 10″ it’s certainly a great gift size! You could even change ‘Welcome Baby’ to the little ones name and birth date so it becomes a birth announcement for the nursery. Make this DIY your own and remember to share your ideas with us here or on our Facebook page! DIY Flower Heart New Baby What You’ll Need: – A wood plaque or a canvas – Lavender acrylic paint – A white paint pen – Paper flowers – Pearl beads – Yarn – White tulle – Hot glue gun and sticks Firstly, paint your plaque or canvas solid lavender (or other colour of your choice). Let dry. Secondly, use the paint pen to write your message on the bottom of the sign and let dry. Cut a length of tulle, enough to cover the front of your sign and a little more so it will wrap around the back. Glue the tulle onto the back of the board to secure. Is someone you know expecting a baby? Planning to throw a baby shower? Decorating is almost as much fun as the party itself! With this beautiful DIY Flower Heart New Baby Sign you will add a really personal touch to your shower decor. The sample that I made is a bit too small for a shower display. At about 6″ by 10″ it’s certainly a great gift size! You could even change ‘Welcome Baby’ to the little ones name and birth date so it becomes a birth announcement for the nursery. Make this DIY your own and remember to share your ideas with us here or on our Facebook page!

Make Your Own Gift Tags https://www.andthenhome.com/make-gift-tags/ Wed, 24 Jan 2018 12:30:55 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2801 I love a good craft, especially the ones that will save me some money in the long run!  Make Your Own Gift Tags and you have a craft that is fun, keeps it personal and can save you the cost of a card if needed.  They are fun to make and completely customizable, you can make then any colour and any shape.  Some examples could be a house for a ‘new home’ gift, or a rattle for a baby shower. The materials for this one are easy to find, you likely have all you need in your crafting supplies.  Use all of the materials I did or add some of your own.  I try to keep it easy because finding time to craft around here with 3 kids under 5 is difficult!  Also, consider less is best for these tags.  Sometimes simple is the most satisfying to look at.  I chose to make a bunch of banner style tags for an easy to grab, all occasion tag.  But I also made some balloons and hearts for birthdays.  Adding a little washi tape to the edges of the tags gave them a ton of life and character.  I love everything sparkly, so naturally the washi tape I used was just that ?  Here’s the how to: MAKE YOUR OWN GIFT TAGS  Materials – card stock – washi tape – scissors – hole puncher – corded ribbon – ruler – pencil What you’ll need to do… Measure and draw your preferred shape onto the cardstock.  The banner shape I used was about 3 x 1/2”.  Once you have it drawn, cut it out. Add your washi tape.  You could use other embellishments such as stickers, gems, glitter etc.  If you need glue, be sure to set them aside and allow them to dry completely.  When your happy with the way your tag looks, punch a hole into one end. Add the corded ribbon and you’re done!  Be sure your ribbon is at least 6″ long to allow it to ‘dangle’ a little. I hope you like these Gift Tags.  Don’t be afraid to combine shapes to create some depth and character.  Don’t forget to make some personalized ones too, choose favourite colours, themes or animals for kids.  That’s what makes this craft so much fun, it can always be different! How to Make Favour Boxes from Scrapbook Paper https://www.andthenhome.com/favour-boxes-from-scrapbook-paper/ Sat, 06 Jan 2018 06:35:30 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2777 Wedding favours are a great way to give your guests a little gift to thank them for taking the time to come to our wedding. Add a personal touch by choosing something to give your guests that has special meaning to you and your partner. For my own wedding we choose a Flake bar. This chocolate bar has some special memories attached to it for us. Just before M and I got married out friends arranged a fun scavenger hunt for us on a crazy weekend in Banff National Park. We spent a day running around trying to tick photos off of our lists, boys vs girls. Get Ready to Make These Awesome, Easy Favours!! One of the tasks was to go into the candy store separately and try to guess what each other would buy. When we met later that day we both pulled out our choices… and they matched! Out of all of the choices in that store, we both picked a Flake bar. We attached small tags with this story attached to our favour boxes so we could include our guests in the story. The challenge with choosing an unconventional favour is that they do not always fit into the ready made boxes you can buy. This problem can be solved with DIY. Christine and I made 200 of these little boxes to give out to our guests. I suggest using a card-stock scrapbook paper, its both cost effective, comes in countless colours and patters and is strong enough to hold the favours. Finish the boxes with ribbons and custom made tags. Our custom tag we used to tell the story of our Flake Bar favour The template I have attached is the one that I created to fit a Flake chocolate bar. You can use this template as a guide to fit your favour by measuring each side of the item you are gifting. DIY Favour Boxes Materials: – Card-stock scrapbook paper – Template – get it here  – Scissors – A ruler – Pencil – Scrapbook glue If your favour does not fit into the template (template measures 8″ x 1″), measure it and adjust the template to fit.  Cut out your template and trace it onto the ‘wrong’ side of your card-stock. Cut out the box shape. Fold the paper on all of the fold lines (a bone tool can help to make sharp creases). Glue the side tabs together to make the box. Let dry and decorate! Get your friends and family together to make short work of this wedding task, and have fun! Unique Wedding Gift Idea a Year of Firsts in Liquor https://www.andthenhome.com/unique-wedding-gift-idea-year-firsts-liquor/ Thu, 17 Aug 2017 06:35:53 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2138 This past weekend we went to a wedding and naturally we needed to get them a gift. Wedding gifts can be tough, especially when the couple doesn’t have a registry. The bride and groom are established and have been living together for some time. They definitely didn’t need a blender or a toaster. We also wanted to make sure we got them something thoughtful as they are one on the sweetest couples we know. With only a few days left before the wedding, we were scratching our heads and praying for inspiration.  Luckily Mr. M saved the day (that’s my hubby for those who don’t follow us regularly) and suggested a basket full of wine, one for a different ‘first’ the couple will have as husband and wife. I’ll admit it… I wasn’t convinced at first. Our friends are not big wine drinkers, and what exactly would this gift look like? I checked it out online and found that a few companies do make labels for this unique gift; Wine Milestone Labels. I still wasn’t sold; seven bottles in one year for people who don’t drink wine regularly seemed like a lot. But as I was reading the wine labels I noticed one that said ‘first fight’. Eureka!! They may not exclusively drink wine but they do drink cocktails and beer.  So instead of just giving wine, we picked out seven different types of liquor!   The seven bottles we picked were: Vodka for ‘First Fight’   Bailey’s Irish Cream for ‘First Christmas’ Rose Wine for ‘First Valentine’s Day’ Large bottle of Craft Beer for ‘First BBQ’ German Wine for ‘First Day Back from the Honeymoon’  (their Honeymoon was a European Tour) Prosecco for ‘First Anniversary’ Champagne for ‘Wedding Night’ (this was the only bottle we brought to the wedding to give them that night. The rest of the bottles we dropped off to their home for convenience) The labels are easy to make. Design a label on your computer. I added and yellow flower because it matched their wedding colours. Feel free to use my design for inspiration and just change the names, dates and colours. Print the labels on sticky back label paper and attach to the bottles. Stack all the bottles in a sturdy basket or box, maybe try using a small wine holder and the couple can always reuse it after all the bottles are empty. Use basket gift shreds to cushion the bottles and wrap the whole gift in plastic wrap or tulle. I’m really happy with how this gift turned out. It’s personal and unique and will hopefully bring the new husband and wife happy reminders of their wedding day all year long. Sweet and Modern Flower Girl Terrarium https://www.andthenhome.com/flower-girl-terrarium/ Wed, 26 Jul 2017 11:00:17 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2031 We recently added a new décor piece to our bookshelves – a terrarium. Terrariums are so popular right now and you see them, and the materials to make them, everywhere. I was admiring ours the other day and was suddenly inspired. A terrarium would make a great modern alternative for a flower girl basket! There are hundreds of ideas out there for flower girls to carry with them, from baskets to bouquets and other unique ideas but I haven’t seen a flower girl terrarium yet. One of the most endearing sights in a wedding procession is when a flower girl scatters her petals down the aisle. With a terrarium, not only can you arrange tiny succulents inside, you can also add flower petals to be sprinkled before the bride. Sadly, I don’t know anyone getting married in the next little while (sad because I love weddings!) so our little niece Tali sweetly stood in as our flower girl. What You’ll Need: A hanging terrarium glass Lace or ribbon Succulents Floral filler – pearls, beads, crystals (or soil for real succulents) E600 or other strong glue Flower petals     Add a piece of lace or ribbon for the flower girl to hold the terrarium with. This is a fantastic place to add your wedding colours into the design. Add your floral filler into the terrarium and use some glue to hold everything in place. Arrange your succulents in the terrarium and glue into place. When the petals are added for the flower girl to scatter, everything else should be glued in so that only the petals end up on the floor. On the big day, add the petals to the ball for the flower girl to scatter down the aisle. Whether its for your big day or someone you care about, we hope this project helps to create beautiful memories. For more wedding ideas check out Christine’s Top Eleven Wedding Trends of 2017
