Both should reflect you and your personality, your aesthetic should always shine through. But with so many options out there, it can help to know what’s trending so you can focus your choices and keep a strategy in mind. That’s why we’ve assembled this list of Top Ten Christmas Decor Trends for 2018 for inspiration. Rainbow Trees Predicted to be the biggest trend this season, this colourful look is sure to make a statement. You can easily create this design by picking up a few boxes of different coloured ornaments. A great tip from www.housebeautiful.com, keep in mind you’ll need more boxes of the colour on the bottom of the tree as it gets wider on the way down. 2. Wicker Tree Skirts The absolutely perfect way to cover the worst bit of your tree. This collar covers up not only the trunk but also the never attractive water basin. You can get one in any colour you like, from white to dark brown, so they suit any palette. Christmas Decor 3. 80’s Vintage Oh the 80’s. A decade where our Christmas’ were filled with tinsel, multi-coloured foil stars, glass ornaments that shattered if you breathed on them and false trees so sparse they looked like they were attacked by termites. But despite all of this, or maybe because of it, you just can’t beat the nostalgic feeling of having a few of these kicking around the house. This must be why 80’s vintage is making such a huge comeback this year, with stores like Michaels even coming out with an entire vintage inspired collection. Pick up some vintage decor here. 4. Mother Nature Natural elements have been a part of Christmas decorating since the beginning of, well, Christmas decorating. It all started with evergreen wreaths, berry garlands and pinecone ornaments.  This isn’t a trend that is going anywhere anytime soon and we can’t say we’re sad about that. 5. Warm Golden Lights In recent years, since the LED bulb came onto the market, the trend in lighting has been icy whites with bold, electric colours. This year that will flip as we see a swing back to warm, golden tones. The glow from these lights will bathe your home in warmth and splendor. But don’t worry! You won’t have to go back to eco-unfriendly incandescent bulbs to get this look. 6. Barely There Christmas Not for everyone, this hot trend is sweeping the decor world. If you can resist hauling all of your decorations from storage, this look can deliver a clean, crisp and modern Christmas. Our friends at A Crafted Passion have eleven inspirational strategies to get you started. 7. DIY Advents Anyone remember those cardboard calendars with the not-so-great little chocolates in them? While those are still hanging around, the trend for 2018 is to make your own. There are unlimited tutorials out there – including our own. Options range from chalkboards, to felt, to wood boxes and everything in-between. There’s even kits that make it that much easier to get started – you can find some here.  8. Plaid Stockings The great thing about this easy trend is  you can pick up these beauties pretty much anywhere. Because they are so popular this year, every store from the local Dollar Store to Pottery Barn has them in-stock and ready to buy. Don’t wait too long though or they’ll be gone! 9. Folklore Inspired by the Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) decorating trend, this Christmas style is sitting front and centre in 2018. Hygge – in a very basic sense – is the Scandinavian concept of feeling cozy contentment and well-being through simple things. With how crazy the world is feeling today, it’s no wonder this concept is so popular. Think candles, blankets, cocoa, and even sweatpants. Its not only about decor, its also a state of mind. 10. Pink I’m dreaming of a Pink Christmas!! Say yes to this fun colour we don’t normally associate with the holidays. Think pink lights, ornaments, wreaths, dare we say… a pink tree?? While that might be pushing most of us past our comfort zones, don’t be afraid to add touches of this trendy colour to your decor strategy. Perhaps try starting with out funky pink photo box pictured above? Get the tutorial here. We hope you found this list of Christmas Decor helpful and that you feel inspired to mix something new into your holiday decor this year! However you decorate your home, we hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

Glittery Coastal Christmas Seashells https://www.andthenhome.com/glittery-coastal-christmas-seashells/ Tue, 16 Oct 2018 03:11:02 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3733 Coastal Christmas has been trending for a while now but it really made a mark last season with home décor stores dedicating entire displays to this beachy movement.  This week, we bring you some inspirational ideas to introduce the seaside into your holiday style. My project this week is some painted and glittery shells. On our shelves in the living room we have a little wooden dish. Every season I switch out what sits in the dish – its currently holding some sparkly skulls for Halloween. I had been thinking of doing something a little different this year for Christmas, so once Christine and I decided to dedicate a week to a coastal theme, I thought of my dish! Once these Coastal Christmas Seashells came out better than I expected, and as a bonus, only took me an hour to make! It may be snowing outside but with these decorations, the summer vibe will certainly last a little longer. Coastal Christmas Seashells What you’ll need: A variety of seashells Paint in navy and gold Glue Teal glitter Paint brushes Firstly, cover some of the shells with glue. Before the glue dries, dip or pour glitter over the shells. Paint some of the shells gold. This will most likely need two coats, be sure to let the paint dry between layers.   Paint the remaining shells navy. I painted only half of these cone shells for a fun effect. Allow them to dry completely. Finally, arrange into a vase, dish or plate to display and you’re done. I hope you liked these Coastal Christmas Seashells!  If you’re looking for more Christmas decor, certainly check out this 2 Step Coastal Christmas Starfish Decoration or these Retro Christmas Photo Transfers. DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-countdown-christmas-chalkboard-paint/ https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-countdown-christmas-chalkboard-paint/#comments Tue, 09 Oct 2018 00:15:29 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2693 It’s only October and I’m already getting excited about Christmas.  Which is not surprising for an avid DIY’er, what is surprising is how fast Christmas comes.  This is one of the reasons I made a DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas board.  Some other reasons are because I love Christmas, the countdown is exciting and I need something that tells me how many days of prep and shopping I have left!  Is this project not what you’re looking for today?  How about a Pretty Pearl Snowflake Pillow Cover.   While my kids love the advent calendars with the little daily surprises inside, I prefer to know exactly how many days until Christmas there are, especially when they ask me…which is just about everyday!  Not to mention, with my oldest in SK, the board gives us an opportunity to do math and practice writing numbers which is awesome. The girls also loved helping me create this decor piece too, which was great. Not only was this chalkboard countdown till Christmas board fun to make, it’s a beautiful addition to my holiday decor.  And when you make yours you make any changes to complement your style too.  The bigger materials for this project such as the wooden board or chalk paint can be found at your local craft store.  Check the dollar store for fun accents and acrylic paint.  This project may take a day or more to complete but that’s including the time it takes for the paint to dry, and there is a lot of painting to do.  Don’t let that discourage you though, it’s easy make and fun to use!   DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas Tutorial   What you’ll need: Wooden Board – I found one that still had bark on it, which made a beautiful accent! Chalkboard Spray Paint Painter’s tape *optional – I used this to cover the bark Acrylic Paint – white, red and green Accents – such as stickers, glitter, buttons etc Glue Paint Brush Pencil Ruler Chalk  What you’ll need to do: I started by covering the bark on my board with the painters tape.  Once the tape was on and the bark was protected I spray painted the board according to the instructions on the can of paint.  I needed about three coats to fully cover the board, allowing each coat to dry completely before beginning the next. Once the board was painted and dry I removed the painter’s tape.  I used a ruler to find the middle of my board and mapped out where I wanted the letter to go.  Keep in mind you’ll want to leave a large spot above your letters for the numbers!  I then free handed the letters using my pencil.  You could also use a stencil if you prefer. *Crafters Tip– Press very lightly when using pencil on wood products as wood can be dented easily. After I traced the letters I used acrylic paint to cover the pencil.  White is the perfect colour to use with this project as it stands out the most.  When I was finished I was slightly disappointed that the red and green weren’t more vibrant, but still happy overall.   DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas When the letters were dry, I added the accents and ‘fun’.  A little snow flake here, a Christmas tree sticker over there and a Santa with reindeer to top it off.  I let the kids pic the accents and was surprisingly content with the placements, lol.  I used toothpicks to help make with some of the intricate painting. Ta-Da!  Your own DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas A perfectly festive Christmas Chalkboard Countdown for you and your family…but mostly you.  haha.  I hope you enjoyed the tutorial, share your pictures of the finished product on our Facebook page.  Looking for more Christmas decor projects?  Check out this DIY Ho Ho Ho Christmas Banner or our Candy Cane Wreath. Happy Crafting! *Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links.  There may be a small commission made by our recommendations, and/or link to products mentioned or services on this website.  Any potential purchase you make will help us continue to bring you amazing content, step-by-steps and product reviews.

After I traced the letters I used acrylic paint to cover the pencil.  White is the perfect colour to use with this project as it stands out the most.  When I was finished I was slightly disappointed that the red and green weren’t more vibrant, but still happy overall.

When the letters were dry, I added the accents and ‘fun’.  A little snow flake here, a Christmas tree sticker over there and a Santa with reindeer to top it off.  I let the kids pic the accents and was surprisingly content with the placements, lol.  I used toothpicks to help make with some of the intricate painting.

Course Appetizer
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 7 minutes
Total Time 22 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 boiled eggs whites cut into rings, yolks removed and separated
  • 1 avocado peeled, seed removed
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 cucumber sliced, diagonally

Instructions

  • Boil the eggs until hard boiled, about 10 min.  Once boiled place the eggs into a pot of cold water and once cooled, peel them.
  • Cut the eggs into round slices.  Try not to break the rings.  The egg yolks should fall out as the rings are cut.  Set them aside.
  • Cut the avocado in half, peel it and remove the seed. Slice the avocado.
  • Place the egg yolks, avocado, mayo, salt and pepper into a bowl and mix them together.  You can use a fork for a lumpy texture, or a food processor for a smooth, creamy texture.  I used a fork.
  • Slice your cucumber into thick slices, in a diagonal direction.
  • Arrange the prepared cucumbers on a platter, top the cucumbers with one egg white ring each, then add some of the avocado mixture to the middle of the egg ring.
  • Consider garnishing with chives, cranberries or paprika

Here’s the step by step!  DIY Christmas Candy Cane Wreath  What you’ll need: About 28 candy canes (any flavour/colour) Hot glue gun Ribbon Some plastic snowflakes  Embellishments (we used sparkly balls) How to:   Before you begin to use glue, we recommend setting up a mock wreath to see how your design will look.  Since we used 3 different types of candy canes we wanted to see how the pattern would look.  Once you’re happy with the look, it will be easier to put together. It is an easy project and most of the supplies can be found at your local dollar store. So, gather your wedding troops and get to it! Christmas or new years DIY Wedding centrepiece What You’ll Need: Small shatterproof ornaments (no bigger than 2”) Styrofoam ball Candle holder for a base Small beads or glass marbles Knife Low temp hot glue gun and sticks Firstly, cut the bottom of the Styrofoam ball so that it has a flat edge that will sit on the candle holder base. Remove the hanger pieces from the tops of the ornaments. Secondly, begin pushing an ornament into the top of the Styrofoam ball. The top ‘bump’ should push into the Styrofoam. Add some glue to hold it in place. Continue adding ornaments around the first one you placed. Keep them as tight together as possible to avoid large gaps. Use some glue to attach the Styrofoam ball to the candle holder. Finally, add the smaller beads or marbles into the gaps between the ornaments. Use some glue to hold in place. Voila! His and Hers Stocking Holders for the Perfect Couple https://www.andthenhome.com/his-and-her-stocking-holders/ Fri, 23 Dec 2016 12:00:16 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=575 Have you finished decorating for Christmas yet, there’s only a couple days left! It’s always a work in progress at our house, I can never resist adding little pieces right up until the big day. One of my favourite Christmas decorations is our stockings and for us it’s only two, one for each of us.  I have looked around for a couple years now and haven’t found anything I liked so I decided to DIY some.  I saw this polka dot design on a notepad at a wedding décor shop and thought it would be perfect as stocking holders instead. They are super simple to make, quick and easy, with only a few supplies needed.  With only a block of wood, some paint and stickers they turned out really cute!   What You’ll Need:   Two blocks of wood (available from scraps in the garage or at a hardware store) Paint brush White paint (I used Craftsmart Multisurface Premium Acrylic Paint) Gold foil letters Teal sticker dots White cup hooks   Step One: Paint both of the blocks completely white (don’t forget the sides) and let dry.  You will probably need two coats, be sure to let dry between coats. Apply the gold foil letters to the bottom right corner of each block.  You’ll need to cut each letter out form the sheet in order to attach them.  The kind of letters I used came with a squeegee to press the foil onto the wood, follow the directions of the foil package that you have.  It is very important that the paint has fully dried for this step as the foil will not stick to a wet surface. Stick the dots onto the top of the blocks, spreading them down towards the bottom.  I used larger dots at the top and then smaller ones as I went down.  If your stickers are not adhering to the wood block, use a glue gun or other adhesive to help stick them down.   Step Two: Screw the cup hooks into the bottom left corner of the blocks.  You will have to press with some force in the beginning, but it will get easier after the screw has started to catch the wood.     That’s it!  Now you can hang your stockings on your mantle and wait for Santa to stop by.   Enjoyed this Quicksie?  Try another Christmas craft: Easy Personalized Christmas Tree Ornaments
