Materials for this project particularly easy to find and there’s usually tons of variety.  All you need is a bowl and base. Be sure to remember sizing of the bowl and base, for example they should fit nicely together. Also, choose bowls/containers that aren’t too deep as birds love to stand in the water and bathe.  I made two different bird baths; a taller one with bright colours and a shorter one that will be incorporated into our fairy garden.  Both are made the exact same way…easily! An inexpensive DIY bird bath that takes less then ten minutes to complete, you can’t go wrong with that. I used the light blue planter upside down to create a tapered look, which further enhanced the bird bath. You can see the planter’s handles in the above photo, of course if you don’t like this, you can simply cover them in mulch or dirt. Antler Beer Can Cozies using Felt https://www.andthenhome.com/antler-beer-can-cozies-using-felt/ Tue, 11 Jun 2019 05:35:24 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4540 A cozy (or Koosie for our American friends) is a cute little sleeve that wraps around your beer can to keep it cool and make it easier to hold if it’s wet from sitting in ice. One of these handy gadgets seemed perfect for this week as we are rapidly approaching…. Father’s Day! We all know that Dad’s are notoriously difficult to shop for but whether your Pop drinks beer, cider or soda, this project is perfect because they could all use one of these cute antler beer can cozies. Still need inspiration for Dad? Check out our list of last minute ideas. Luckily, this no sew project is super simple. The hardest part is drawing the antlers, so if needed, don’t hesitate to grab a template from the internet to make things easier. Also, this project can be adapted in so many designs – flowers, birds, Star Wars, Disney. Really the possibilities are endless. For now though, let’s get started with a naturally inspired design. What you’ll need: Felt Embroidery thread and needle Scissors Glue Ruler and pen Measure out a 4″ by 8″ rectangle of felt and cut it out. Use the embroidery thread to stitch the sides together, making several large x’s along the edge, and be sure to measure the size against the can to make sure it’s a tight fit before stitching the edges together. Use the same thread to stitch decorative lines along the top and bottom edges of the cozy. Draw and cut out antlers to fit onto the cozy. I made two cozies – one with deer antlers and one with moose antlers. Glue the antlers in place on the cozy and this is easiest to do after slipping the cozy over a can so the placement is easier to see. And that’s it – now sit back and enjoy a cold one with your new beer can cozies! Happy Father’s Day and Happy Crafting. Retro and Trendy Tie Dye Tea Towels https://www.andthenhome.com/retro-and-trendy-tie-dye-tea-towels/ Tue, 07 May 2019 03:18:37 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4446 One of the biggest trends popping up this year is – believe it or not – tie dye. To tell the truth I’ve never actually tie dyed anything before so I was bit nervous to give this DIY fad a try. But I decided to give it a go and make some tie dye tea towels and I can now say that there’s nothing to worry about, it’s easier than it looks. Much easier. In fact this whole project (minus dry time) took about 10 mins! There’s a couple of key things to keep in mind – only use natural fabrics as they take the dye waaaay better than man-made fibers, and if you want a bold pattern ignore most tutorials and dip dry fabric into the dye. In my first attempt I tried to dye a wet tea towel but the water soaked up the dye and I ended up with a completely orange tea towel. I couldn’t be happier with my second attempt though! I LOVE the bright bold colour and unique patterns that emerged. Another great thing about this technique is that no two towels will ever look the same, you get a new pattern every time. They would definitely make great gifts (Mother’s Day right around the corner…) and since you can do them in any colour under the sun, you can easily personalize them to anyone’s kitchen. This is a DIY I will encourage anyone to try – please share your projects with us, we’d love to see it! What you’ll need: Plain white cotton tea towels Fabric dye Gloves Elastic bands Bucket Fold your tea towels. For the first towel, I folded it in a wide accordion (about 4”), then starting at the bottom, fold up into a triangle. Continue making triangles until the entire towel is folded. Don’t worry if the triangle isn’t perfect! Secure with elastics (or in my case twine – I forgot to pick up elastics) 🙂 For the second towel, I folded it in a slimmer accordion (about 2”) and left it in a long rope shape. Secure with elastics. Dip the towels one at a time into the dye (wearing gloves). Dip one side and then flip and dip the other side. I held the towels in the dye for about a minute or so. Don’t fully submerge the towel – dip it in and let the dye run through the folds. Let the towels sit folded for about 10 mins and then remove the elastics. Spread them out on a drop cloth or clothes line to dry and you’re done! Check our list of tie dye projects for more inspiration. Hope you had fun tie dying and happy crafting! How to create a DIY Letter Art Summer Canvas What you’ll need: 12 x 18 white canvas Coral spray paint Teal spray paint Glue Stick on letters Black paint pen How to achieve it: Spray your canvas using the directions on the side of the can.  You may need two coats, allow both to dry completely between coats.   Once the canvas is dry, add the word “Hello” to the top. I had black letter stickers and since I wanted this summer sign to pop, I sprayed them with some teal paint. Some glue may be needed when sticking the letters to the canvas. Then you can add the word “Sunshine” diagonally across the canvas.  I used letter stickers for mine.  Try to use a different font or size for each word as this gives the completed word are a fantastic look. Next, add some fun sayings using the paint pen. You can write anything you like, but since mine will be for the patio, I wanted something relating to that. That’s it, your DIY printed canvas is complete!  If you’re looking for more ways to bring in summer take a look at our Boho Cake Stand. Looking for a delicious summer dessert recipe? How to create a DIY Letter Art Summer Canvas

What you’ll need:

  • 12 x 18 white canvas
  • Coral spray paint
  • Teal spray paint
  • Glue
  • Stick on letters
  • Black paint pen

How to achieve it:

Hello Sunshine Canvas, DIY Summer Decor Project

Spray your canvas using the directions on the side of the can.  You may need two coats, allow both to dry completely between coats.

Once the canvas is dry, add the word “Hello” to the top. I had black letter stickers and since I wanted this summer sign to pop, I sprayed them with some teal paint. Some glue may be needed when sticking the letters to the canvas.

Hello Sunshine Canvas, DIY Summer Decor Project

Then you can add the word “Sunshine” diagonally across the canvas.  I used letter stickers for mine.  Try to use a different font or size for each word as this gives the completed word are a fantastic look.

Hello Sunshine Canvas, DIY Summer Decor Project

Next, add some fun sayings using the paint pen. You can write anything you like, but since mine will be for the patio, I wanted something relating to that.

That’s it, your DIY printed canvas is complete!  If you’re looking for more ways to bring in summer take a look at our Boho Cake Stand. Looking for a delicious summer dessert recipe? These Campfire Cupcakes by Champagne and Sugarplums are perfect!

Coulourful Triangle Tablecloth https://www.andthenhome.com/coulourful-triangle-tablecloth/ Fri, 19 Apr 2019 18:50:33 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4376 This past weekend found me outside scrubbing winter dust and dirt off of our patio furniture. As I sat in my now cobweb free chair, taking a small break from the cleaning, I started to picture how to spruce up our patio set for a brand new season. While contemplating this, my eyes landed on our patio table. It’s a fine table although a bit….boring. The solution? A new triangle tablecloth! Perfect, now the design. Something colourful is a must, something exciting and trendy would be great. I googled for a while (my little break quickly turning into an extended break) and found it. A geometric print tablecloth, covered in colourful triangles. A fun, easy design. So I got started. I will admit that this project wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Making the triangles does require some concentration, I had some misses that I needed to fix up. And then painting the triangles…. I won’t lie, it takes forever. But the end result is 100% worth it! What You’ll Need: A plain tablecloth or some fabric Ruler and pencil Lots of colourful fabric paint Paint brush A cartload of patience Decide how big you want your triangles to be, I did mine at 6”. Measure 6” intervals along the edges of the cloth. Use a yardstick to connect the lines diagonally in both directions. Then draw a line across the lines horizontally to divide the lines into triangles. Paint in the triangles, one colour at a time in a random pattern. You may need to let some sections dry before moving on with this step. Let dry and you’re done! Although there are only two steps to this project it does require a time commitment. Perfectly Cozy Popsicle Blanket https://www.andthenhome.com/perfectly-cozy-popsicle-blanket/ Tue, 28 Aug 2018 20:12:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3507 As we enter the final, last hurrah of summer, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. Beside our patio door we have a basket full of blankets that lives there just for nights like these, when its not cold enough to call it a night but there’s definitely a nip in the air. To add that personal touch, and to really celebrate summer,  I made this fun Popsicle inspired patio blanket that’s a perfect addition for my blanket box. No sewing machine needed here; just an iron and some decorative hand stitching. To be honest, I upgraded a $5 fleece blanket that I picked up at big box store but you could easily head to your local fabric store and grab a few yards of fleece if you can’t find one. Add some sheet of felt from the dollar store and some fusible interfacing – you’ve got a custom blanket for under $15! DIY Popsicle Blanket What You’ll Need: A fleece blanket Felt sheets in six colours Brown or burlap ribbon Scissors Paper (for making a template) Fusible interfacing An iron Embroidery thread and needle Cut out a paper template to the size you want your Popsicle to be. It’s easier is you fold the paper in half and draw and cut your template from the fold. This way the Popsicle shape will be even on both sides. Now we can make the first Popsicle. Cut the yellow felt in the whole shape, this will be your base. Cut an orange layer by laying half of the template onto the and half off. When you lay the orange felt on top of the yellow, it should only cover half of the Popsicle. Finally, cut the top blue portion by laying only the top third of your template onto the felt. When layered together, this makes our first Popsicle. For our second Popsicle, cut out a full template in light green felt, like we did for the yellow layer in Popsicle number one. To make the Popsicle bumps, cut out two strips of dark green felt and then round both edges to make semi-circles. These will lay in the centre of the Popsicle, side by side. For our last Popsicle, cut out a full pink template and then a half template in yellow. Lay the yellow half on top of the pink and your done. To make the Popsicle sticks, cut out three lengths of ribbon and then round of one end. Time to assemble all the pieces! This step takes some time, it’s not difficult but setting each layer takes patience. Cut out pieces of fusible interfacing (this can be purchased at any fabric store, it is a heat activated adhesive for fabric) to match each of the felt Popsicle pieces and the sticks. Use an iron (follow the directions for heat setting, but be sure to turn of the steam) to attach each piece of felt together. Attach the sticks directly to the blanket, this will determine where the Popsicle’s will be so space it out before you iron them down. Once the sticks are in place, attach the Popsicle’s in place. Add some stitches around the Popsicle edges in coloured threads for an added touch. And it’s done! Curl up on the patio with a good book and make the most of the last few weeks of summer. Enjoy! True North Bookends for Canada Day https://www.andthenhome.com/canada-day-bookends/ Fri, 29 Jun 2018 13:00:38 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1805 Bookends add a charming detail to any room and we have a TON of books. I’m a fan of the classics like Jane Austen and the Bronte Sisters. I also love modern historical fiction (Philippa Gregory is one of my favs) and pretty much any biography. We actually still have an old encyclopedia collection, it’s outdated but its beautiful and looks great on our bookshelves. As a collector of books and hoarder of craft supplies making seasonal bookends is a natural fit! I am officially inspired and will defiantly be making bookends for other holidays going forward. This design will take a couple hours to complete but will add a big patriotic statement just in time for July 1st. Canada Day Bookends What You’ll Need: Scrap wood pieces or a solid block of wood (you need something about 5” x 5”) Wood glue Paint pens in black and red White and black paint Sandpaper Graphite transfer paper Pencil Design template – click here for True and here for North Step One: Firstly, paint the wood pieces with a base coat in black paint and let dry Once the black paint is dry, cover it completely with a coat of white paint. Let this layer dry. Take the sandpaper and lightly sand away the white layer of paint in some spots, creating a distressed effect, try to use a light hand when sanding so that the black layer of paint doesn’t get sanded off too. Step Two: Secondly, use the graphite paper and a pencil to transfer the design onto the face of your bookends. You could use your own design or freehand anything you like here too Colour in the design using the paint pens Step Three: Finally, assemble two wood pieces to create an L shape. Add a third piece to make a front face for the design to go on.
