We were inspired this week to get a head start on Spring decorating. Technically, Winter will be hanging around for a few more weeks, but the weather has started to turn so we’re embracing as much of the warm weather Mother Nature is willing to give. Thinking about Spring makes me think of the rhyme – April showers bring May flowers. And if you’re in a Spring shower, you need an umbrella. Phew, that was a little mind journey, but we got there! This was how a came up with this easy umbrella art piece. This easy little canvas project sparks a breath of air with bright colours and patterns. We can never stop shouting about the versatility of scrapbook paper, its really one of those must have crat supplies that can be used for so many projects. Making this craft made me happy and I hope it will do the same for you! What you’ll need: Black paint pen Canvas Scrapbook paper Scissors Modge Podge Paint brushes Acrylic paint Make an umbrella top template. I free drew mine, but you can also print one – try searching for umbrella clipart. Cut out nine umbrella tops. Paint the canvas a solid colour that will compliment your umbrellas and let dry. Modge Podge the umbrella tops in place. Use a thin layer of the glue both under and on top of the paper. Let this dry as well. Use a paint pen to add handles to the umbrella tops. All done! Top Ten Christmas Decorating Trends for 2018 https://www.andthenhome.com/top-ten-christmas-decorating-trends-for-2018/ Tue, 20 Nov 2018 18:30:34 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3856 We all approach the design of our homes differently, so why should our Christmas decorations be any different? Both should reflect you and your personality, your aesthetic should always shine through. But with so many options out there, it can help to know what’s trending so you can focus your choices and keep a strategy in mind. That’s why we’ve assembled this list of Top Ten Christmas Decor Trends for 2018 for inspiration. Rainbow Trees Predicted to be the biggest trend this season, this colourful look is sure to make a statement. You can easily create this design by picking up a few boxes of different coloured ornaments. A great tip from www.housebeautiful.com, keep in mind you’ll need more boxes of the colour on the bottom of the tree as it gets wider on the way down. 2. Wicker Tree Skirts The absolutely perfect way to cover the worst bit of your tree. This collar covers up not only the trunk but also the never attractive water basin. You can get one in any colour you like, from white to dark brown, so they suit any palette. Christmas Decor 3. 80’s Vintage Oh the 80’s. A decade where our Christmas’ were filled with tinsel, multi-coloured foil stars, glass ornaments that shattered if you breathed on them and false trees so sparse they looked like they were attacked by termites. But despite all of this, or maybe because of it, you just can’t beat the nostalgic feeling of having a few of these kicking around the house. This must be why 80’s vintage is making such a huge comeback this year, with stores like Michaels even coming out with an entire vintage inspired collection. Pick up some vintage decor here. 4. Mother Nature Natural elements have been a part of Christmas decorating since the beginning of, well, Christmas decorating. It all started with evergreen wreaths, berry garlands and pinecone ornaments.  This isn’t a trend that is going anywhere anytime soon and we can’t say we’re sad about that. 5. Warm Golden Lights In recent years, since the LED bulb came onto the market, the trend in lighting has been icy whites with bold, electric colours. This year that will flip as we see a swing back to warm, golden tones. The glow from these lights will bathe your home in warmth and splendor. But don’t worry! You won’t have to go back to eco-unfriendly incandescent bulbs to get this look. 6. Barely There Christmas Not for everyone, this hot trend is sweeping the decor world. If you can resist hauling all of your decorations from storage, this look can deliver a clean, crisp and modern Christmas. Our friends at A Crafted Passion have eleven inspirational strategies to get you started. 7. DIY Advents Anyone remember those cardboard calendars with the not-so-great little chocolates in them? While those are still hanging around, the trend for 2018 is to make your own. There are unlimited tutorials out there – including our own. Options range from chalkboards, to felt, to wood boxes and everything in-between. There’s even kits that make it that much easier to get started – you can find some here.  8. Plaid Stockings The great thing about this easy trend is  you can pick up these beauties pretty much anywhere. Because they are so popular this year, every store from the local Dollar Store to Pottery Barn has them in-stock and ready to buy. Don’t wait too long though or they’ll be gone! 9. Folklore Inspired by the Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) decorating trend, this Christmas style is sitting front and centre in 2018. Hygge – in a very basic sense – is the Scandinavian concept of feeling cozy contentment and well-being through simple things. With how crazy the world is feeling today, it’s no wonder this concept is so popular. Think candles, blankets, cocoa, and even sweatpants. Its not only about decor, its also a state of mind. 10. Pink I’m dreaming of a Pink Christmas!! Say yes to this fun colour we don’t normally associate with the holidays. Think pink lights, ornaments, wreaths, dare we say… a pink tree?? While that might be pushing most of us past our comfort zones, don’t be afraid to add touches of this trendy colour to your decor strategy. Perhaps try starting with out funky pink photo box pictured above? Get the tutorial here. We hope you found this list of Christmas Decor helpful and that you feel inspired to mix something new into your holiday decor this year! However you decorate your home, we hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

Home Decor Trend – Stylish Fringed Mirror https://www.andthenhome.com/stylish-fringed-mirror/ https://www.andthenhome.com/stylish-fringed-mirror/#comments Mon, 16 Apr 2018 06:20:29 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3094 Fringe is in and in a big way. Its one of the hottest trends in home decor for 2018. It used to be reserved for blankets and rugs, but not anymore. This year expect to see fringe trim on furniture, lamps and more. Even on mirrors, like this DIY project. It’s a simple craft to put together, although the prep does take some time. And be prepared to vacuum when you’re done! Separating and brushing out the yarn leaves A LOT of lint behind. I used cream yarn with a slight pop of dark green (another hot trend, but more on that later) but of course you can use any colour combination you like. Lets get started: What You’ll Need: Two or more balls of yarn in your colour choice Scissors A mirror Hot glue gun and sticks Hairbrush Cut lengths of yarn about 30 cm (12″) in length. How many you’ll need will depend on the size of mirror you’re using. I cut around 250 strands which was enough for my 12″ mirror. Pull apart each piece of yarn into individual strands. This is not hard but it must be done slowly. If you pull on a strand too hard it will break. Leave one piece of yarn intact for the next step. We’re going to use the yarn that you left in one piece as the base for the fringe. Take about 20 of the pulled apart strands in a bunch. Loop the bunch around the base yarn to create a half-knot. Repeat this until you have a fringe that will cover the entire length of your mirror. Use the hot glue gun to attach the fringe to the back edge of the mirror. It may help to tie a knot in the end as a stopper of sorts, so the yarn doesn’t slip out. Repeat on the opposite side so that the fringe is pulled tight and straight across the mirror front. Gently pull a bristle hairbrush over the fringe to fluff up the yarn.  Cut the bottom o the fringe into the pattern of your choice. I did a layered look, but you could also cut it on a curve or straight across. Hang in your bedroom, entryway or hall for a bold statement piece that will catch everyone’s eye!

DIY Funny and Chic Bathroom Decor Sign https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-funny-and-chic-bathroom-decor-sign/ Fri, 13 Apr 2018 01:36:30 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3081 We just finished our bathroom renovation and I’m so excited to deck it out in new decor!  It’s our powder room on the main floor, so it’s not a large bathroom, which is something to keep in mind.  Less is more after all!  I also want our personal tastes to come through too and what is more personal then a DIY Funny and Chic Bathroom Decor Sign that you make yourself??   It’s an easy sign to design, the letters are the hardest part if you want to free hand them.  If your not that adventurous you can always use a stencil with a sponge to create the wording.  This sign can be painted any colour.  Right now the 2018 trending colours are still shades of grey, teal with white and black.  Also natural and rustic undertones are still trending.  This sign can be made rustic by staining the wood instead of using paint.  But, enough about bathroom trends and choices for this sign, lets see how to do it!   DIY Bathroom Sign – Chic or Rustic and so funny! What you’ll need: Wooden board White acrylic paint Grey acrylic paint pencil paintbrushes Optional – stencil with stencil sponge  What you’ll need to do: Paint the background of your board.  I used white with just a small amount of teal splashed in.  This may take two coats.  Be sure the first has completely dried before moving onto the next to avoid any clumps from forming.   Once your board is dry rough in your letters.  Be sure not to press too hard with the pencil as it could dent your board, if your using a soft wood.  If your using stencils, go ahead and place it now. Once your happy with your lettering, paint them in.  Set aside to allow it to dry and you’re done! DIY Flower Heart New Baby Sign https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-flower-heart-new-baby-sign/ Sun, 25 Feb 2018 16:32:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2979 Is someone you know expecting a baby? Planning to throw a baby shower? Decorating is almost as much fun as the party itself! With this beautiful DIY Flower Heart New Baby Sign you will add a really personal touch to your shower decor. The sample that I made is a bit too small for a shower display. At about 6″ by 10″ it’s certainly a great gift size! You could even change ‘Welcome Baby’ to the little ones name and birth date so it becomes a birth announcement for the nursery. Make this DIY your own and remember to share your ideas with us here or on our Facebook page! DIY Flower Heart New Baby What You’ll Need: – A wood plaque or a canvas – Lavender acrylic paint – A white paint pen – Paper flowers – Pearl beads – Yarn – White tulle – Hot glue gun and sticks Firstly, paint your plaque or canvas solid lavender (or other colour of your choice). Let dry. Secondly, use the paint pen to write your message on the bottom of the sign and let dry. Cut a length of tulle, enough to cover the front of your sign and a little more so it will wrap around the back. Glue the tulle onto the back of the board to secure. Start gluing the paper flowers onto the middle of the sign. Keep adding flowers to make a heart shape. Add the pearl beads to the centre of each of the paper flowers. Finally, tie a length of yarn around the top of the sign to finish it off. We hope you liked this DIY Flower Heart New Baby and it helps you with your shower decor planning or gift giving! Remember to share your results with us 🙂 Planning a baby shower?  Certainly, check out this Easy Breezy Garland for a tropical themed shower or our Yarn and Cat Mobile!

Coffee Filter Art Project for Kids and Adults https://www.andthenhome.com/coffee-filter-art-project-for-kids-and-adults/ Sat, 20 Jan 2018 02:45:55 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2848 As the cold weather drags on (seemingly forever) Christine and I got to talking about ways to keep her little ones entertained.  Not having children of my own, I borrowed my little nieces to help me with this art project. This is a great adult/child combo project.  I got artistic and painted the background, the girls did the same to make the trees. I did do my part at home, before going to see them so that I could help them make their watercolour trees.  We all loved the finished result and now I have something we made together to hang in my home and remind me of my favourite kiddos. Coffee Filter Art Project What You’ll Need: –          A blank canvas or canvas board –          Acrylic paints in white, blue (light and dark) –          Paint brushes –          Coffee filters –          Washable markers in greens and yellows –          Spray bottle with water –          Scissors –          Foam adhesive stickers   Firstly, the Adult Part (or kids too if they are doing the whole shebang): Cover the canvas in a thin layer of water to prop the canvas to take the paint better. Paint the sky (the top two-thirds of the canvas) blue. Paint some snow onto the bottom third of the canvas. Start with white paint and free hand in some soft curves for snowy hills. Add some low-lights in dark blue to add depth, using a wet brush to blend in the paint. Using an at least a 1” or wider brush, splatter paint some white snowflakes on top of the sky. To do this, dip your brush into some white paint. Hold the brush sideways and above the canvas. Use your finger to pull the bristles in a quick upward motion so that paint splatters off of the bristles and onto the canvas. This gets messy so make sure to cover your work surface with newspaper or an old cloth. Secondly, the Kiddos part: Get the kids to colour the coffee filters in abstract lines and shapes with different shades of green and yellow markers. When they are all done colouring, lay the coffee filters down flat on a table and spray lightly with water from the spray bottle. The ink will begin to run together and spread. Be careful not to spray too much water though because the colours with get over mixed and start to look muddy. Leave them to dry; it should take about 20 mins or so. Draw triangle shapes onto the coffee filters and cut out the trees. Finally, use the foam squares to attach the trees to the canvas background. We hope you love this coffee filter art project!  Looking for more projects to help the winter go by?  Certainly try these Frozen Ice Globes or this Umbrella Art Canvas!
