Whenever I see these beautiful projects as I scroll through Pinterest or while walking through home décor stores, I really regret not learning how to knit. I did try to learn, but I could never quite pick it up. But since this week we’re covering yarn crafts, I scoured the internet for inspiration. There’s actually a lot of really creative projects of there that don’t require needles. Yarn wrapped, weaved, dyed, knotted – there are so many great techniques available. I decided on a yarn wrapped picture frame. This isn’t my first attempt at yarn wrapping – check out my ombre letters to see that. For this project though, I didn’t even need to shop! I had an old frame in the basement and some yarn scrapes left from another project. The beauty is that’s really all you need. I added beads to mine, but that is totally optional. This is a great way to add texture to your home in such a creative way. This one is easy, but it will take a bit of time so pop on a movie and let’s get started! What you’ll need: An old photo frame Yarn Glue gun and sticks Beads (optional) Start by tying the yarn around one side of the frame and secure with a knot. Don’t worry if it’s not super tight, you can fix that in the end by wrapping over the first strand. Continue wrapping the yarn all around the frame. I left the corners blank, I liked the look (and TBH its easier). Tie another knot in the back of the frame once you’re done. Try to make this knot nice and tight, but if needed you can secure with a spot of hot glue. If you’re going to add beads, look at where you want to place them and remember to thread them onto the yarn in the right spots. When putting the glass and backing back on, you’ll need to glue it in place since we’re covered up the lip of the frame. Make sure you’re happy with the photo you’ve chosen cause you won’t be able to change it once you’ve secured the backing. All done! Happy crafting! Up-cycled Dollar Store Trash Can https://www.andthenhome.com/up-cycled-dollar-store-trash-can/ Tue, 08 Jan 2019 12:00:05 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2227 New Year, New Decor! The New Year is all about resolutions and fresh starts so this week we’re focusing on refreshing items to give them new life. Take this $1 garbage bin that was hanging around our bathroom. Its not the prettiest thing I’ve ever brought home so it’s time to give it a face lift. Since our master bath has a bit of a nautical theme, I decided on twine, navy and anchors. This entire project will take less than an hour to complete but you’ll be happy with results. Feel free to experiment with the theme and remember to share your results with us in the comments section! There are two designs here, mostly because I started one and then changed my mind about it. That’s okay though, half the fun of DIY is trail and error! What you’ll need: A cheap trash can Sisal rope Fabric Hot glue gun and sticks Stencil (optional) Paint (optional) Pouncer or makeup sponge (optional)   Use the hot glue to make a line down the can to attach the fabric. Continue around the whole can is covered. Attach the sisal rope around the bottom of the can, wrapping it around and around. Make sure you start and end on the same side of the can so the end bits are hidden in the back. Repeat the same thing at the top of the can. This would be the end of this design…except I didn’t love it. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I didn’t think it would really work in the space. So, I kept going… And covered the patterned fabric up with some navy fabric. And then stencilled on an anchor. This was the version that I decided to use is our bathroom. I’m happy with how it looks, better than the colourful circles! Try our Upgraded Dollar Store Mosaic Vase for more up-cycling crafting.   Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links.  There may be a small commission made by our recommendations, and/or link to products mentioned or services on this website.  Your purchase will help us continue to bring you amazing content, step-by-steps and product reviews.

Top Ten Christmas Decorating Trends for 2018 https://www.andthenhome.com/top-ten-christmas-decorating-trends-for-2018/ Tue, 20 Nov 2018 18:30:34 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3856 We all approach the design of our homes differently, so why should our Christmas decorations be any different? Both should reflect you and your personality, your aesthetic should always shine through. But with so many options out there, it can help to know what’s trending so you can focus your choices and keep a strategy in mind. That’s why we’ve assembled this list of Top Ten Christmas Decor Trends for 2018 for inspiration. Rainbow Trees Predicted to be the biggest trend this season, this colourful look is sure to make a statement. You can easily create this design by picking up a few boxes of different coloured ornaments. A great tip from www.housebeautiful.com, keep in mind you’ll need more boxes of the colour on the bottom of the tree as it gets wider on the way down. 2. Wicker Tree Skirts The absolutely perfect way to cover the worst bit of your tree. This collar covers up not only the trunk but also the never attractive water basin. You can get one in any colour you like, from white to dark brown, so they suit any palette. Christmas Decor 3. 80’s Vintage Oh the 80’s. A decade where our Christmas’ were filled with tinsel, multi-coloured foil stars, glass ornaments that shattered if you breathed on them and false trees so sparse they looked like they were attacked by termites. But despite all of this, or maybe because of it, you just can’t beat the nostalgic feeling of having a few of these kicking around the house. This must be why 80’s vintage is making such a huge comeback this year, with stores like Michaels even coming out with an entire vintage inspired collection. Pick up some vintage decor here. 4. Mother Nature Natural elements have been a part of Christmas decorating since the beginning of, well, Christmas decorating. It all started with evergreen wreaths, berry garlands and pinecone ornaments.  This isn’t a trend that is going anywhere anytime soon and we can’t say we’re sad about that. 5. Warm Golden Lights In recent years, since the LED bulb came onto the market, the trend in lighting has been icy whites with bold, electric colours. This year that will flip as we see a swing back to warm, golden tones. The glow from these lights will bathe your home in warmth and splendor. But don’t worry! You won’t have to go back to eco-unfriendly incandescent bulbs to get this look. 6. Barely There Christmas Not for everyone, this hot trend is sweeping the decor world. If you can resist hauling all of your decorations from storage, this look can deliver a clean, crisp and modern Christmas. Our friends at A Crafted Passion have eleven inspirational strategies to get you started. 7. DIY Advents Anyone remember those cardboard calendars with the not-so-great little chocolates in them? While those are still hanging around, the trend for 2018 is to make your own. There are unlimited tutorials out there – including our own. Options range from chalkboards, to felt, to wood boxes and everything in-between. There’s even kits that make it that much easier to get started – you can find some here.  8. Plaid Stockings The great thing about this easy trend is  you can pick up these beauties pretty much anywhere. Because they are so popular this year, every store from the local Dollar Store to Pottery Barn has them in-stock and ready to buy. Don’t wait too long though or they’ll be gone! 9. Folklore Inspired by the Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) decorating trend, this Christmas style is sitting front and centre in 2018. Hygge – in a very basic sense – is the Scandinavian concept of feeling cozy contentment and well-being through simple things. With how crazy the world is feeling today, it’s no wonder this concept is so popular. Think candles, blankets, cocoa, and even sweatpants. Its not only about decor, its also a state of mind. 10. Pink I’m dreaming of a Pink Christmas!! Say yes to this fun colour we don’t normally associate with the holidays. Think pink lights, ornaments, wreaths, dare we say… a pink tree?? While that might be pushing most of us past our comfort zones, don’t be afraid to add touches of this trendy colour to your decor strategy. Perhaps try starting with out funky pink photo box pictured above? Get the tutorial here. We hope you found this list of Christmas Decor helpful and that you feel inspired to mix something new into your holiday decor this year! However you decorate your home, we hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

But with so many options out there, it can help to know what’s trending so you can focus your choices and keep a strategy in mind. That’s why we’ve assembled this list of Top Ten Christmas Decor Trends for 2018 for inspiration.

  1. Rainbow Trees

Predicted to be the biggest trend this season, this colourful look is sure to make a statement. You can easily create this design by picking up a few boxes of different coloured ornaments. A great tip from www.housebeautiful.com, keep in mind you’ll need more boxes of the colour on the bottom of the tree as it gets wider on the way down.

2. Wicker Tree Skirts

The absolutely perfect way to cover the worst bit of your tree. This collar covers up not only the trunk but also the never attractive water basin. You can get one in any colour you like, from white to dark brown, so they suit any palette.

3. 80’s Vintage

Oh the 80’s.

4. Mother Nature

Natural elements have been a part of Christmas decorating since the beginning of, well, Christmas decorating. It all started with evergreen wreaths, berry garlands and pinecone ornaments.  This isn’t a trend that is going anywhere anytime soon and we can’t say we’re sad about that.

5. Warm Golden Lights

In recent years, since the LED bulb came onto the market, the trend in lighting has been icy whites with bold, electric colours. This year that will flip as we see a swing back to warm, golden tones. The glow from these lights will bathe your home in warmth and splendor. But don’t worry! You won’t have to go back to eco-unfriendly incandescent bulbs to get this look.

6. Barely There Christmas

Not for everyone, this hot trend is sweeping the decor world. If you can resist hauling all of your decorations from storage, this look can deliver a clean, crisp and modern Christmas. Our friends at A Crafted Passion have eleven inspirational strategies to get you started.

7. DIY Advents

Anyone remember those cardboard calendars with the not-so-great little chocolates in them? While those are still hanging around, the trend for 2018 is to make your own. There are unlimited tutorials out there – including our own. Options range from chalkboards, to felt, to wood boxes and everything in-between. There’s even kits that make it that much easier to get started – you can find some here.

8. Plaid Stockings

The great thing about this easy trend is  you can pick up these beauties pretty much anywhere. Because they are so popular this year, every store from the local Dollar Store to Pottery Barn has them in-stock and ready to buy. Don’t wait too long though or they’ll be gone!

9. Folklore

Inspired by the Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) decorating trend, this Christmas style is sitting front and centre in 2018.

10. Pink

Christmas Decor

I’m dreaming of a Pink Christmas!!

Colour Pop Pattern Frenzy 10 Minute Vase https://www.andthenhome.com/colour-pop-pattern-frenzy-10-minute-vase/ Tue, 06 Nov 2018 10:33:59 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3782 It’s getting to that point of year when its dark when we wake up and dark when we go to sleep. The days are shorter and we don’t see so much of the sun. In the dark days of winter, having colour in your home can be so important. And so, my inspiration for this week’s project is born – a colourful, patterned vase. Mixing patterns seems like it shouldn’t work, but it does. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Polka dots and stripes, plaid and hounds-tooth, they go together better than you would think. Using scrapbook paper and tape, this ten-minute project can add light and whimsy to any decor. This a great project for DIY newbies and for pro’s with only a few crafting moments to spare. Let’s get to it! Colour Pop Vase! What you’ll need: Two glass vases, one slightly smaller to easily but snugly fit inside the other  Scrapbook paper Scissors Ruler Pencil Tape Select two sheets of colourful, patterned scrapbook paper. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns! Measure one of the papers to wrap around the smaller vase (or in my case, a stemless wine glass) and use some tape to hold in place. Measure out some stripes of paper from your contrast colour and cut out. Try cutting the stripes into a couple different sizes. Fold the stripes to fit inside the larger vase.  Lay the stripes inside the larger vase and then slip the smaller vase to sit inside. The smaller vase will hold the water so that the paper doesn’t get wet. That’s it! Add a beautiful floral arrangement to finish it off and you’re done!  Looking for more colourful decor?  Try these Colour Pop Coasters. Top Outdoor Halloween Decor Ideas! https://www.andthenhome.com/top-outdoor-halloween-decor-ideas/ Tue, 23 Oct 2018 02:01:20 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3756 I love to see my neighbours Halloween (and soon Christmas) decorations and displays.  Some displays are simply a pumpkin with some straw or corn husks while others go above and beyond with elaborate mechanical skeletons and ghosts.  In the past I have always used my pumpkin topiary with a few real pumpkins thrown in but recently I’ve been wanting to do something a little more fun.   There are many ways to decorate your home for halloween, but the one thing that looks the best is consistency!  It needs to flow.  You can achieve that by using the same type of decor,  colour or theme.  And don’t forget, less can be more!  I’m going to show you some of the top Halloween decorating tips that I found during my searching, so stay with me.  There’s going to be some spooky birds, ghoulish ghosts and glowing lanterns. Let’s get into the Top Outdoor Halloween Decor Ideas!     First up is this eerie Raven Inspired Halloween Porch by Create, Craft, Love.  This outdoor halloween decor really caught my eye because it’s simple yet impactful!  You can find the ravens at your local dollar store and the branches from your backyard or walking path, the black and white pumpkins are a perfect addition and if you don’t want to spend the money at the craft store, spray paint some real ones.  This one is also very easy and inexpensive to create but looks fantastic on the front lawn.  And really, it’s all you need to decorate your home!  Outdoor halloween decor can’t get better then this.  You could add some black eyes to these ghosty faces, or leave them with none to give an extra creepy vibe.  See Listotic for these ghosts and more. This one is great for kids and adults alike.  Turn a simple gourd into a ghoulish ghost!!  Very cute, super easy and halloween effective.  This project gets an A+ for meeting all the important criteria for those on the go.  These gourds are perfect to transform the outdoor decor you already had for fall.  See how to make these ghosty gourds by House of Hawthornes here. Loving the list?  There’s more Top Outdoor Halloween Decor Ideas! I love this set up!  The white DIY ghost in the background finishes off the black and white props on the table.  The black caged skull is perfectly placed with minimal effort.  This is what I was talking about when I mentioned having a theme, all of the items go together, creating a high end look!  Check out the DIY tutorial at DIY Show Off here. This one is from Pinterest, there are a couple others too, but this one really stood out for me.  It’s super creepy because all of the elements work together.  The old rusted wheel barrel, weathered shovel and matching lantern all help to make this outdoor halloween display come to life.  Adding some leaves and browning long grass around the skulls keep it realistic…and by using only skulls and not bones, it tells a story!  Love this! Let’s not forget a lighted pathway!  This look is mysterious or enchanting, however you want to view it.  It’s an easy way to light up your home for halloween.  Add some hay bails and some pumpkins and your all set for halloween night.  Be sure to use battery operated ‘candles’ for this project!  See the easy tutorial by And Then Home here. DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-countdown-christmas-chalkboard-paint/ https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-countdown-christmas-chalkboard-paint/#comments Tue, 09 Oct 2018 00:15:29 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2693 It’s only October and I’m already getting excited about Christmas.  Which is not surprising for an avid DIY’er, what is surprising is how fast Christmas comes.  This is one of the reasons I made a DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas board.  Some other reasons are because I love Christmas, the countdown is exciting and I need something that tells me how many days of prep and shopping I have left!  Is this project not what you’re looking for today?  How about a Pretty Pearl Snowflake Pillow Cover.   While my kids love the advent calendars with the little daily surprises inside, I prefer to know exactly how many days until Christmas there are, especially when they ask me…which is just about everyday!  Not to mention, with my oldest in SK, the board gives us an opportunity to do math and practice writing numbers which is awesome. The girls also loved helping me create this decor piece too, which was great. Not only was this chalkboard countdown till Christmas board fun to make, it’s a beautiful addition to my holiday decor.  And when you make yours you make any changes to complement your style too.  The bigger materials for this project such as the wooden board or chalk paint can be found at your local craft store.  Check the dollar store for fun accents and acrylic paint.  This project may take a day or more to complete but that’s including the time it takes for the paint to dry, and there is a lot of painting to do.  Don’t let that discourage you though, it’s easy make and fun to use!   DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas Tutorial   What you’ll need: Wooden Board – I found one that still had bark on it, which made a beautiful accent! Chalkboard Spray Paint Painter’s tape *optional – I used this to cover the bark Acrylic Paint – white, red and green Accents – such as stickers, glitter, buttons etc Glue Paint Brush Pencil Ruler Chalk  What you’ll need to do: I started by covering the bark on my board with the painters tape.  Once the tape was on and the bark was protected I spray painted the board according to the instructions on the can of paint.  I needed about three coats to fully cover the board, allowing each coat to dry completely before beginning the next. Once the board was painted and dry I removed the painter’s tape.  I used a ruler to find the middle of my board and mapped out where I wanted the letter to go.  Keep in mind you’ll want to leave a large spot above your letters for the numbers!  I then free handed the letters using my pencil.  You could also use a stencil if you prefer. *Crafters Tip– Press very lightly when using pencil on wood products as wood can be dented easily. After I traced the letters I used acrylic paint to cover the pencil.  White is the perfect colour to use with this project as it stands out the most.  When I was finished I was slightly disappointed that the red and green weren’t more vibrant, but still happy overall.   DIY Chalkboard Countdown to Christmas When the letters were dry, I added the accents and ‘fun’.  A little snow flake here, a Christmas tree sticker over there and a Santa with reindeer to top it off.  I let the kids pic the accents and was surprisingly content with the placements, lol.  I used toothpicks to help make with some of the intricate painting. It’s only October and I’m already getting excited about Christmas.

What you’ll need:
  • Wooden Board – I found one that still had bark on it, which made a beautiful accent!
  • Chalkboard Spray Paint
  • Painter’s tape *optional – I used this to cover the bark
  • Acrylic Paint – white, red and green
  • Accents – such as stickers, glitter, buttons etc
  • Glue
  • Paint Brush
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Chalk

What you’ll need to do:
I started by covering the bark on my board with the painters tape.
