Materials for this project particularly easy to find and there’s usually tons of variety.  All you need is a bowl and base. Be sure to remember sizing of the bowl and base, for example they should fit nicely together. Also, choose bowls/containers that aren’t too deep as birds love to stand in the water and bathe.  I made two different bird baths; a taller one with bright colours and a shorter one that will be incorporated into our fairy garden.  Both are made the exact same way…easily!

What you’ll need

• Plastic bowl or shallow container
• Tin planter
• Hot glue gun with glue 

There’s really only one step to complete this DIY garden bird bath and that is to glue the bowl to the top of the planter!  It’s surprisingly that simple. An inexpensive DIY bird bath that takes less then ten minutes to complete, you can’t go wrong with that.

I used the light blue planter upside down to create a tapered look, which further enhanced the bird bath. You can see the planter’s handles in the above photo, of course if you don’t like this, you can simply cover them in mulch or dirt. If the bird bath is in the grass, the handles will be hidden among the grass and you won’t see them at all!

The main feature of this patio upgrade are the crates and potted plants.  I also love the shear curtain hung in the background, it really gives a breezy, relaxing feel which is exactly what you want while enjoying a coffee or beer.

Before the upgrade I had only a iron bistro set on the porch.  Since this set is timeless, it fit right in with the new look. At the store I picked up a few items that I thought looked nice together, both trendy while sticking to my style.  Between the dollar store and department store the whole upgrade only cost $50 and it took less then 45min to put together.  The longest part was installing the shear curtain because I had to screw them into the wood.  Here’s a quick list of materials that made my upgrade look amazing!

What you’ll need for your DIY Patio Makeover, How To Upgrade Your Patio on a Budget

• Three artificial plants in pots
• Shear curtain
• Curtain rode (check your patio out and choose the right type of fixture: pressure mounted, magnetic or bracket style rod)
• Large circular placemat (table decor)
• A utensil holder (table decor)
• A carpet for the floor
• A large tin bucket
• Wall art
• Two wooden crates
• Other small decor for the table/wooden crates

It might take some time to place the items where they look best, but you’ll get there.  I moved the decor around a lot before I finally chose how I wanted it to look.  You can also add to the decor as you go, so don’t worry about getting all of the materials in one trip.

There’s a couple of key things to keep in mind – only use natural fabrics as they take the dye waaaay better than man-made fibers, and if you want a bold pattern ignore most tutorials and dip dry fabric into the dye. In my first attempt I tried to dye a wet tea towel but the water soaked up the dye and I ended up with a completely orange tea towel.

I couldn’t be happier with my second attempt though! I LOVE the bright bold colour and unique patterns that emerged. Another great thing about this technique is that no two towels will ever look the same, you get a new pattern every time. They would definitely make great gifts (Mother’s Day right around the corner…) and since you can do them in any colour under the sun, you can easily personalize them to anyone’s kitchen. This is a DIY I will encourage anyone to try – please share your projects with us, we’d love to see it!

What you’ll need:

• Plain white cotton tea towels
• Fabric dye
• Gloves
• Elastic bands
• Bucket

Fold your tea towels. For the first towel, I folded it in a wide accordion (about 4”), then starting at the bottom, fold up into a triangle. Continue making triangles until the entire towel is folded. Don’t worry if the triangle isn’t perfect! Secure with elastics (or in my case twine – I forgot to pick up elastics)

For the second towel, I folded it in a slimmer accordion (about 2”) and left it in a long rope shape. Secure with elastics.

Dip the towels one at a time into the dye (wearing gloves). Dip one side and then flip and dip the other side. I held the towels in the dye for about a minute or so. Don’t fully submerge the towel – dip it in and let the dye run through the folds.

Let the towels sit folded for about 10 mins and then remove the elastics. Spread them out on a drop cloth or clothes line to dry and you’re done!

You won’t need much to complete this summer DIY.  All you need is a canvas, spray paint and some stencils or sticker letters.  You can also free hand your letters as well with a paint pen.  Choose bright colours to really pop this summer and catch some attention, this project will look especially nice outside.  Trending colours this summer are “fire” inspired.  So we are seeing coral, deep reds, bright reds, pastel yellows, turmeric and yellow-gold.  We’re also seeing lavender, bright green, ocean blues and royal blues.

How to create a DIY Letter Art Summer Canvas

What you’ll need:

• 12 x 18 white canvas
• Coral spray paint
• Teal spray paint
• Glue
• Stick on letters
• Black paint pen

How to achieve it:

Spray your canvas using the directions on the side of the can.  You may need two coats, allow both to dry completely between coats.  

Once the canvas is dry, add the word “Hello” to the top. I had black letter stickers and since I wanted this summer sign to pop, I sprayed them with some teal paint. Some glue may be needed when sticking the letters to the canvas.

Then you can add the word “Sunshine” diagonally across the canvas.  I used letter stickers for mine.  Try to use a different font or size for each word as this gives the completed word are a fantastic look.

Next, add some fun sayings using the paint pen. You can write anything you like, but since mine will be for the patio, I wanted something relating to that.

Perfect, now the design. Something colourful is a must, something exciting and trendy would be great. I googled for a while (my little break quickly turning into an extended break) and found it. A geometric print tablecloth, covered in colourful triangles. A fun, easy design. So I got started. I will admit that this project wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Making the triangles does require some concentration, I had some misses that I needed to fix up. And then painting the triangles…. I won’t lie, it takes forever. But the end result is 100% worth it!

What You’ll Need:

• A plain tablecloth or some fabric
• Ruler and pencil
• Lots of colourful fabric paint
• Paint brush
• A cartload of patience

Decide how big you want your triangles to be, I did mine at 6”. Measure 6” intervals along the edges of the cloth. Use a yardstick to connect the lines diagonally in both directions. Then draw a line across the lines horizontally to divide the lines into triangles.

Paint in the triangles, one colour at a time in a random pattern. You may need to let some sections dry before moving on with this step.

Let dry and you’re done! Although there are only two steps to this project it does require a time commitment. Don’t forget to share your photos with us and let us know how this project worked for you.

No sewing machine needed here; just an iron and some decorative hand stitching. To be honest, I upgraded a $5 fleece blanket that I picked up at big box store but you could easily head to your local fabric store and grab a few yards of fleece if you can’t find one. Add some sheet of felt from the dollar store and some fusible interfacing – you’ve got a custom blanket for under $15!

DIY Popsicle Blanket

What You’ll Need:

• A fleece blanket
• Felt sheets in six colours
• Brown or burlap ribbon
• Scissors
• Paper (for making a template)
• Fusible interfacing
• An iron
• Embroidery thread and needle

Cut out a paper template to the size you want your Popsicle to be. It’s easier is you fold the paper in half and draw and cut your template from the fold. This way the Popsicle shape will be even on both sides.

Now we can make the first Popsicle. Cut the yellow felt in the whole shape, this will be your base. Cut an orange layer by laying half of the template onto the and half off. When you lay the orange felt on top of the yellow, it should only cover half of the Popsicle. Finally, cut the top blue portion by laying only the top third of your template onto the felt. When layered together, this makes our first Popsicle.

For our second Popsicle, cut out a full template in light green felt, like we did for the yellow layer in Popsicle number one. To make the Popsicle bumps, cut out two strips of dark green felt and then round both edges to make semi-circles. These will lay in the centre of the Popsicle, side by side.

For our last Popsicle, cut out a full pink template and then a half template in yellow. Lay the yellow half on top of the pink and your done.

To make the Popsicle sticks, cut out three lengths of ribbon and then round of one end.

Time to assemble all the pieces! This step takes some time, it’s not difficult but setting each layer takes patience. Cut out pieces of fusible interfacing (this can be purchased at any fabric store, it is a heat activated adhesive for fabric) to match each of the felt Popsicle pieces and the sticks.

Use an iron (follow the directions for heat setting, but be sure to turn of the steam) to attach each piece of felt together. Attach the sticks directly to the blanket, this will determine where the Popsicle’s will be so space it out before you iron them down. Once the sticks are in place, attach the Popsicle’s in place.

Add some stitches around the Popsicle edges in coloured threads for an added touch.

And it’s done! Curl up on the patio with a good book and make the most of the last few weeks of summer. Enjoy!

3 Step Easy Mirror Beach Decor

What You’ll Need:

• Mirrors
• Large shells or starfish
• Thick twine
• Hot glue gun and sticks
• Sea-glass or opaque spray paint

Step One:

Firstly, coat the mirrors in a couple coats of spray-paint to give a frosty, sea-glass finish.

Step Two:

Secondly, use some hot glue to attach a large shell or starfish to the centre of the mirror.

Step Three:

Finally, glue the twine around the outside of the mirror.

All done!! Remember, don’t get tide down, life’s a beach!
