We were inspired this week to get a head start on Spring decorating. Technically, Winter will be hanging around for a few more weeks, but the weather has started to turn so we’re embracing as much of the warm weather Mother Nature is willing to give. Thinking about Spring makes me think of the rhyme – April showers bring May flowers. And if you’re in a Spring shower, you need an umbrella. Phew, that was a little mind journey, but we got there! This was how a came up with this easy umbrella art piece. This easy little canvas project sparks a breath of air with bright colours and patterns. We can never stop shouting about the versatility of scrapbook paper, its really one of those must have crat supplies that can be used for so many projects. Making this craft made me happy and I hope it will do the same for you! What you’ll need: Black paint pen Canvas Scrapbook paper Scissors Modge Podge Paint brushes Acrylic paint Make an umbrella top template. I free drew mine, but you can also print one – try searching for umbrella clipart. Cut out nine umbrella tops. Paint the canvas a solid colour that will compliment your umbrellas and let dry. 5 Ways to Welcome Spring into Your Home https://www.andthenhome.com/ways-to-spring/ Fri, 23 Mar 2018 20:51:09 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3036 The snow is melting, the sun is staying out longer, the birds are coming home… Spring is finally here. It may feel like forever sine the last time you saw anything but white roads and lawns but the gravel trucks are emerging and the grass is peaking through. Who else is excited to open the windows for the first time and let the fresh air flow through the house? Spring is all about freshness and new beginnings so we’ve put together a list of 5 Ways to Welcome Spring into Your Home, to get a head start on chasing away the winter blues. Spring Cleaning This is one chore that no one looking forward to but it is a necessary evil. Open the windows on the next warm day and dig in. Consider really getting into the nitty gritty –  scrub the walls and baseboards, move the beds and couches, wash the windows to let the sun in, switch out the furnace filters and soak all the faucets with vinegar to clear away the buildup. Try breaking the tasks up into a couple days work to lighten the load. 2. Go Green The garden will have to be tended but first, let’s start indoors. Bring some green inside to liven things up. Real or silk plants are both great options (especially if your like me and don’t have the slightest green thumb). Try a terrarium for a modern take, ferns always look great, or fresh cut or potted flowers for colour. There’s Still More Ways to Welcome Spring into Your Home 3. Outdoor Decor I don’t know whats on your porch looks like right now but mine has some almost dead, very wilty evergreen branches and a winter wreath that winter storms really didn’t take care of. Renewing this area of your house brightens up the thing. New arrangements with spring flowers will really freshen your entryway. Don’t forget the front door – try Christine’s Chevron Door Hanger for a personal, fun addition to your decor. 4. Switch up Your Bedding  Winter is ruled by dark shades and comfy, thick blankets to keep out the cold. Now it’s getting warmer, store all those dark sheets and welcome the new season with lighter, brighter shades of bedding. Try swapping out pillows for light colors and floral prints.  5. Delight your Sense of Smell Spring is a season associated with the aroma of nature. Let your home too, reflect the same.  Just get some citrus, rose, lavender or any other floral scented candles or essential oils to ensure that your home always welcomes others with warm, breezy aromas of the spring. We hope you liked this list of ways to welcome spring into your home!  If you’re looking for more spring projects certainly check out our Spring Forward Umbrella Art.

Michaels Copycat Mixed Media Love Canvas https://www.andthenhome.com/mixed-media-love-canvas/ Wed, 24 May 2017 11:00:47 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1506 Who among us crafters doesn’t love a good copycat project? I recently found this pretty little canvas at Michael’s and was instantly inspired. What if instead of a flat painting I added some silk and paper flowers and made it into a much more interesting Mixed Media Love Canvas? Voila! A truly original copy of a beautiful painting that’s easy and quick to make.   What You’ll Need: A 12” x 12” canvas Acrylic paint in pale yellow, dark yellow and teal Two 1-2” paint brushes Hot glue gun and sticks A variety of pink paper flowers A variety plastic leaf stems A large pink silk flower A knife Scissors Start by painting the entire canvas in a pale-yellow colour. Add a little bit of water to the paint to give a watercolour translucent look to the base layer. Let dry. Take the dark yellow paint and dab it onto the canvas making spots of colour instead of painting it on. Take another brush and with a little bit of water spread the paint around but don’t mix it in completely. This will create a watercolour marble effect. Let this layer dry too. Use the teal paint to create the letters. Remember to leave enough space for the flower to make the ‘O’. The letters should be about 4” tall and wide, but don’t worry about making them perfect, they should be perfectly imperfect. Decide where you want the flower O to be and use a sharp knife to cut a small hole for the flower stem to fit into so that the flower can lay flat. Use some hot glue to secure the flower in place. Add a couple of stems to the edge of the flower. Glue some stems and paper flowers onto the letters. You may have to trim some of the leaves off the stems so that they will lay flat.   Hope you enjoy you’re Mixed Media Love Canvas as much as I love mine! If you do you should check out another of our copycat projects like this one 10 Copycat Recipes That Will Totally Trick Your Tastebuds

Upgraded Dollar Store Mosaic Vase https://www.andthenhome.com/dollar-store-mosaic-vase/ Wed, 17 May 2017 11:00:37 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1429 Who doesn’t love the dollar store? The things you can find in those stores is unbelievable. You can wander around and be so inspired by all the stuff that you can upgrade and turn into truly awesome projects. This trip I found a $2.00 vase and some small glass tiles and decided to turn a plain glass vase into a lovely and unique mosaic. This project does take almost an entire day; there is a lot of waiting for drying time. Here’s how to upgrade a Dollar Store Mosaic Vase. What you’ll need: Plain glass vase Glass tiles Tile glue Popsicle sticks Tile grout Sponge   Spread the tile glue on both the vase and the rough side of the tiles. Press the tiles in place. Continue adding tiles to the vase in random order. Fill the entire vase with tiles. You can work your way around the vase, the glue should set quickly to allow you to turn the vase as you go. Once the vase is covered (this will take a while and your hands will be very sticky!) leave it to dry for a few hours so that the glue is completely dry before moving onto the next step. Make the tile grout according to the instructions for the brand you have. Spread the grout over the tiles, filling in any gaps. You’ll have to do this step one side at a time. Let the grout dry for about 30 mins before moving on. When the grout has dried, use a damp sponge to wipe the tiles clean. The sponge should only remove the grout on the tile surface and not from between them. If the grout between the tiles is coming out, leave the tiles to dry for some more time. Once all the grout has been removed, you’re upgraded vase is done! There are many Dollar Store vase upgrades out there. Check out this one from Polished Habitat www.polishedhabitat.com/2015/cheap-to-chic-vase-makeovers-plus-finish-giveaway/

How to Paint a Chevron – Spring Door Hanger https://www.andthenhome.com/paint-chevron-spring-door-hanger/ Fri, 12 May 2017 11:30:33 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1357 I have an obsession with outdoor door hangers, I’ll admit it.  I find it’s a very simple and clean way to decorate your home.  And since spring is here and the sun is finally shining I feel the need to add to my collection.  I love this chevron letter door hanger and I hope you do too.  Read on to find out How to Paint a Chevron a Spring Door Hanger, do it yourself!!   I have always wanted to use a chevron pattern in my decor and this was the perfect opportunity.  Although painting the chevron was a little challenging, the end result was beautiful.  There is something satisfying about pulling the tape off the product and seeing the crisp lines of the chevron coming together.       The other thing I love about this project was using bright spring colours against the dark stained wood.  Teal is one of my favourite colours so it wasn’t difficult for me to choose it.  The white stamps are beautifully contrasted with the dark wood and the flower accents help represent spring tying the letter “S” in nicely. I chose the letter “S” because it is a monogram of my last name and conveniently works for the word Spring but you can pick any letter you’d like.  With that said, let’s take a look at the step by step. How to Paint a Chevron a Spring Door Hanger What you’ll need: wood plank hanger a large wooden letter embellishments (paper flowers used here) spray paint large piece of crafting paper black marker glue masking tape pencil ruler flower stencil (optional) white paint (if stencil is used) Step 1. The first step is to set up the chevron grid.  Completing the chevron will be the most tedious part of the project.  Begin the grid by measuring and marking a rectangle that is slightly larger then your letter.  Next is to create a grid within the rectangle, measure and mark even squares throughout the whole box.  My squares are 2″ by 2″, which created a nice chevron.  Step 2.  Once the grid has been drawn you need to create the chevron pattern.  Do this by drawing a diagonal line from the top left corner to the bottom right hand corner of one 2 ” x 2″ square.  In the next square draw a line from the bottom left corner to the top right.  Repeat this method until all the squares have a diagonal line. Step 3.  Place your letter in the grid, using a ruler and a pencil recreate the grid and diagonal lines onto the letter.  Don’t press too hard on with your pencil as you will need to erase these lines later. Step 4.  Add the tape to your letter.  Place the tape in a diagonal pattern, using your grid as a guideline.  Be sure the tape is straight and secure.  Use a sharp utility knife to make crisp lines and points where needed.  You should begin to see your chevron pattern.   Step 5. Once the tape has been placed you can spray paint the letter.  Two coats may be needed, allow the letter to dry completely between each coat and once fully painted. Step 6.  When the paint has dried, you can pull the tape off carefully to reveal your pattern. Ta-Da!!  The chevron is complete!  Use your eraser to remove any visual pencil marks. Step 7.  Glue your letter to the wood plank (if you aren’t sure which one to use, check out our handy Glue Guide).  Set aside until completely dry. Step 8.  Time for the embellishments!  Glue your flowers, glitter, rhinestones or bows onto your letter.  I used a stencil with white paint on the corners of my wood plank to give it more character. This project is beautiful once finished.   You can see it from the road and I have had a lot of great comments about it.  The chevron is stunning on the letter and worth all the hard work.  If you have a creative eye you can always ‘eyeball’ the design and go straight to the tape, but if you want to be sure it’s straight, do it the long way!

Build your own Boho Cake Stand in 8 Easy Steps https://www.andthenhome.com/boho-cakestand/ https://www.andthenhome.com/boho-cakestand/#comments Wed, 01 Mar 2017 12:00:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=791 Cakes come in every shape, size, and flavour and the stands that support them should be the same.  This week we will  break the mould and create our own DIY Boho Cake Stand.  This cake stand will be spring themed in the hope that warm weather won’t be far behind!  When your stand is done be sure to use sealer on the wood base and hand wash only. A little stenciling and some glue and we’re on our way.  It’ll be a piece of cake! What you’ll need: Glass plate Wood base (a candle holder works perfectly) Stencil Pouncer Repositionable stencil spray (helps to hold the stencil in place) Enamel paints in white, turquoise, yellow and peach Paint brushes (one wide and one detail) E600 Glue (a silicone glue that holds just about anything)   STEP ONE: Paint the different sections of your wood base in the three coloured paints, creating a striping effect. Paint the flat top of your wood base, the side that will be holding the plate.  Let dry.   STEP TWO: Paint white lines between each colour on your wood base.  This step is a little tricky, take your time. STEP THREE: Using your stencil spray and pouncer; on the top of the base, stencil one elephant (or whichever image you have chosen) in white paint.  Let dry. STEP FOUR: Using the same stencil, stamp the elephant image evenly around the edge of the plate six times.  Let dry. STEP FIVE: Use a border stencil to fill in the gaps between the elephants around the edge of the plate.  I chose the diamond pattern seen here. STEP SIX: Going back to your wooden base, colour in a portion of the elephant in the colours you used on the base. STEP SEVEN: Colour in the same design on the elephants on the diamonds on the glass plate. STEP EIGHT: When the elephants are dry, use the E600 to attach the plate to the base. Leave this to dry for an hour or so and your  Boho Cake Stand is ready to hold tasty treats! Enjoy this Project? Try this one: Sparkle Mason Jars
