Whenever I see these beautiful projects as I scroll through Pinterest or while walking through home décor stores, I really regret not learning how to knit. I did try to learn, but I could never quite pick it up. But since this week we’re covering yarn crafts, I scoured the internet for inspiration. There’s actually a lot of really creative projects of there that don’t require needles. Yarn wrapped, weaved, dyed, knotted – there are so many great techniques available. I decided on a yarn wrapped picture frame. This isn’t my first attempt at yarn wrapping – check out my ombre letters to see that. For this project though, I didn’t even need to shop! I had an old frame in the basement and some yarn scrapes left from another project. The beauty is that’s really all you need. I added beads to mine, but that is totally optional. This is a great way to add texture to your home in such a creative way. This one is easy, but it will take a bit of time so pop on a movie and let’s get started! What you’ll need: An old photo frame Yarn Glue gun and sticks Beads (optional) Start by tying the yarn around one side of the frame and secure with a knot. Don’t worry if it’s not super tight, you can fix that in the end by wrapping over the first strand. Continue wrapping the yarn all around the frame. I left the corners blank, I liked the look (and TBH its easier). Tie another knot in the back of the frame once you’re done. Try to make this knot nice and tight, but if needed you can secure with a spot of hot glue. If you’re going to add beads, look at where you want to place them and remember to thread them onto the yarn in the right spots. When putting the glass and backing back on, you’ll need to glue it in place since we’re covered up the lip of the frame. Make sure you’re happy with the photo you’ve chosen cause you won’t be able to change it once you’ve secured the backing. All done! Happy crafting! Home Decor Trend – Stylish Fringed Mirror https://www.andthenhome.com/stylish-fringed-mirror/ https://www.andthenhome.com/stylish-fringed-mirror/#comments Mon, 16 Apr 2018 06:20:29 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3094 Fringe is in and in a big way. Its one of the hottest trends in home decor for 2018. It used to be reserved for blankets and rugs, but not anymore. This year expect to see fringe trim on furniture, lamps and more. Even on mirrors, like this DIY project. It’s a simple craft to put together, although the prep does take some time. And be prepared to vacuum when you’re done! Separating and brushing out the yarn leaves A LOT of lint behind. I used cream yarn with a slight pop of dark green (another hot trend, but more on that later) but of course you can use any colour combination you like. Lets get started: What You’ll Need: Two or more balls of yarn in your colour choice Scissors A mirror Hot glue gun and sticks Hairbrush Cut lengths of yarn about 30 cm (12″) in length. How many you’ll need will depend on the size of mirror you’re using. I cut around 250 strands which was enough for my 12″ mirror. Pull apart each piece of yarn into individual strands. This is not hard but it must be done slowly. If you pull on a strand too hard it will break. Leave one piece of yarn intact for the next step. We’re going to use the yarn that you left in one piece as the base for the fringe. Take about 20 of the pulled apart strands in a bunch. Loop the bunch around the base yarn to create a half-knot. Repeat this until you have a fringe that will cover the entire length of your mirror. Use the hot glue gun to attach the fringe to the back edge of the mirror. It may help to tie a knot in the end as a stopper of sorts, so the yarn doesn’t slip out. Repeat on the opposite side so that the fringe is pulled tight and straight across the mirror front. Gently pull a bristle hairbrush over the fringe to fluff up the yarn.  Cut the bottom o the fringe into the pattern of your choice. I did a layered look, but you could also cut it on a curve or straight across. Hang in your bedroom, entryway or hall for a bold statement piece that will catch everyone’s eye!

Boho Chevron Gold Leaf Key-Holder https://www.andthenhome.com/boho-chevron-gold-leaf-key-holder/ Fri, 26 Jan 2018 23:25:36 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2876 We carry keys with us everyday, it’s one of those things you never leave home without. Yet somehow they manage to disappear every time we walk through the door. You swear you put them down in the same place every day, yet somehow come morning – poof – they’re gone.  The need for a key holder is real. It’s not just a fun, super-cool DIY, its a morning lifesaver.  I will admit, I have been living on the edge. Every morning I search through my purses until I remember which one I was carrying yesterday and finally find my keys, just in time to run out the door. No more! It is time to make a Boho Chevron Gold Leaf Key-Holder so my mornings will be a little bit smoother. To decide on a design I searched images of different types of key-holders. There are key-holders made of everything you can imagine. Lego, seat belts, corks – if you can think of something, someone has made a key-holders out of it. As incredible as these designs are, there is one flaw that I couldn’t overlook. Most of the designs have the keys dangling from the bottom of the key rack which I wanted to avoid as I didn’t want the keys scratching the wall. So I decided on a full board design to protect my paint. For the design I was inspired by a drink tray I saw in home decor store. It looks complicated but it’s actually pretty easy, a roll of masking tape does the trick. Hopefully you love it as much as I do, here’s how to make one… What You’ll Need: Masking Tape Wood board Acrylic paint in white, dark brown, dark blue and light blue Gold leafing and adhesive Paint brushes Small hooks (I used these decorative wall hooks from a home decor store) Screws and a drill Tape out your design onto the wood board. Start with the chevron in the middle of the board, laying down three stripes of tape. Use a ruler to make sure it’s even. Once you measure out one line, you can just tape the rest in, no need to measure all the stripes. Continue with the rest of the design, straight lines on the bottom half and a reverse chevron on the top. Remove tape from the lines you want to paint white, take a look at the completed pic to see the pattern. Paint the exposed lines and let dry. It’s very important to let the paint dry completely before you move onto the next step. If you try to cover the painted lines too soon the tape will remove the paint. Repeat the same steps with the dark brown paint, recovering the white painted lines with more tape. The light brown stripes I left unpainted to let the wood show. If you don’t like the colour of your wood board, paint these lines with a medium tone brown. Lets add some colour! Once all of the brown and white paint had dried start on the chevron. Paint the top line in light blue and the bottom line in dark blue. The middle line will be gold leafed. Tape off the blue lines of the chevron (make sure the paint is dry). Paint the exposed line with a layer of leaf adhesive. Follow the directions on your leaf adhesive, most of them need to set for a few minutes to become tacky. When the glue is ready, lay pieces of gold leafing over the adhesive and brush lightly and gently with a dry paint brush. Gently brush away the excess leafing. I decided to add a small box at the bottom of the board to hold little odds and ends. I painted it match the striped design. If you are also adding a box use some wood screws and drill into place. TIP: Use some hot glue to hold the box into place so it doesn’t move around while trying to attach it. Screw or attach your hooks to the board at the top. Hang your Boho Chevron Gold Leaf Key-Holder on the wall and never lose those keys again.  Looking for some fun home decor?  Certainly check out these bright Beach Decor – Flip Flop Hangers! Michaels Copycat Mixed Media Love Canvas https://www.andthenhome.com/mixed-media-love-canvas/ Wed, 24 May 2017 11:00:47 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1506 Who among us crafters doesn’t love a good copycat project? I recently found this pretty little canvas at Michael’s and was instantly inspired. What if instead of a flat painting I added some silk and paper flowers and made it into a much more interesting Mixed Media Love Canvas? Voila! A truly original copy of a beautiful painting that’s easy and quick to make.   What You’ll Need: A 12” x 12” canvas Acrylic paint in pale yellow, dark yellow and teal Two 1-2” paint brushes Hot glue gun and sticks A variety of pink paper flowers A variety plastic leaf stems A large pink silk flower A knife Scissors Start by painting the entire canvas in a pale-yellow colour. Add a little bit of water to the paint to give a watercolour translucent look to the base layer. Let dry. Take the dark yellow paint and dab it onto the canvas making spots of colour instead of painting it on. Take another brush and with a little bit of water spread the paint around but don’t mix it in completely. This will create a watercolour marble effect. Let this layer dry too. Use the teal paint to create the letters. Remember to leave enough space for the flower to make the ‘O’. The letters should be about 4” tall and wide, but don’t worry about making them perfect, they should be perfectly imperfect. Decide where you want the flower O to be and use a sharp knife to cut a small hole for the flower stem to fit into so that the flower can lay flat. Use some hot glue to secure the flower in place. Add a couple of stems to the edge of the flower. Glue some stems and paper flowers onto the letters. You may have to trim some of the leaves off the stems so that they will lay flat.   Hope you enjoy you’re Mixed Media Love Canvas as much as I love mine! Build your own Boho Cake Stand in 8 Easy Steps https://www.andthenhome.com/boho-cakestand/ https://www.andthenhome.com/boho-cakestand/#comments Wed, 01 Mar 2017 12:00:28 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=791 Cakes come in every shape, size, and flavour and the stands that support them should be the same.  This week we will  break the mould and create our own DIY Boho Cake Stand.  This cake stand will be spring themed in the hope that warm weather won’t be far behind!  When your stand is done be sure to use sealer on the wood base and hand wash only. A little stenciling and some glue and we’re on our way.  It’ll be a piece of cake! What you’ll need: Glass plate Wood base (a candle holder works perfectly) Stencil Pouncer Repositionable stencil spray (helps to hold the stencil in place) Enamel paints in white, turquoise, yellow and peach Paint brushes (one wide and one detail) E600 Glue (a silicone glue that holds just about anything)   STEP ONE: Paint the different sections of your wood base in the three coloured paints, creating a striping effect. Paint the flat top of your wood base, the side that will be holding the plate.  Let dry.   STEP TWO: Paint white lines between each colour on your wood base.  This step is a little tricky, take your time. STEP THREE: Using your stencil spray and pouncer; on the top of the base, stencil one elephant (or whichever image you have chosen) in white paint.  Let dry. STEP FOUR: Using the same stencil, stamp the elephant image evenly around the edge of the plate six times.  Let dry. STEP FIVE: Use a border stencil to fill in the gaps between the elephants around the edge of the plate.  I chose the diamond pattern seen here. STEP SIX: Going back to your wooden base, colour in a portion of the elephant in the colours you used on the base. STEP SEVEN: Colour in the same design on the elephants on the diamonds on the glass plate. STEP EIGHT: When the elephants are dry, use the E600 to attach the plate to the base. Leave this to dry for an hour or so and your  Boho Cake Stand is ready to hold tasty treats! Enjoy this Project? Try this one: Sparkle Mason Jars

Cakes come in every shape, size, and flavour and the stands that support them should be the same.

What you’ll need:

  • Glass plate
  • Wood base (a candle holder works perfectly)
  • Stencil
  • Pouncer
  • Repositionable stencil spray (helps to hold the stencil in place)
  • Enamel paints in white, turquoise, yellow and peach
  • Paint brushes (one wide and one detail)
  • E600 Glue (a silicone glue that holds just about anything)

STEP ONE:

Paint the different sections of your wood base in the three coloured paints, creating a striping effect. Paint the flat top of your wood base, the side that will be holding the plate.  Let dry.

STEP TWO:

Paint white lines between each colour on your wood base.  This step is a little tricky, take your time.

STEP THREE:

Using your stencil spray and pouncer; on the top of the base, stencil one elephant (or whichever image you have chosen) in white paint.  Let dry.

STEP FOUR:

Using the same stencil, stamp the elephant image evenly around the edge of the plate six times.  Let dry.

STEP FIVE:

Use a border stencil to fill in the gaps between the elephants around the edge of the plate.  I chose the diamond pattern seen here.

STEP SIX:

Going back to your wooden base, colour in a portion of the elephant in the colours you used on the base.

STEP SEVEN:

Colour in the same design on the elephants on the diamonds on the glass plate.

STEP EIGHT:

DIY Chic Mandala Wood Plaques https://www.andthenhome.com/diy-mandala-wood-plaques/ Wed, 25 Jan 2017 12:00:06 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=673 Hand painted and stenciled wood signs have been all over the place lately and I am definitely a fan of this movement.  This week I’m doing these Mandala Wood Plaques (love!) and I guarantee I will be making more wood plaque projects like this in the future.  You can pick up the wood bases from any craft or dollar store, you can even cut down scrap wood pallets if you are feeling up to working with some tools.  This craft is easy and fairly quick – minus paint and stencil drying time.  The Mandala Stencils I found at my local craft store, keep in mind you could easily change the image to pretty much any image you like.  Hope you enjoy these Mandalas!   What You’ll Need:   Three Wood Plaques of varying sizes Three Mandala stencils Krylon Easy Tack Repositionable Spray or other brand of stencil spray Stencil Pouncer Acrylic Paint (I used Folkart Home Décor Chalk finish in Sheepskin)   Step One: Spray the back side of your stencil with the stencil spray.  Be sure to read the directions for the brand you are using.  The Krylon brand requires 2 mins of shaking the can and after spraying, waiting for 60 seconds before pressing down to the wood. When the glue is ready lay the stencil, glue side down, onto your first wood plaque and press the edges to seal the stencil down.  This will ensure that none of the paint leaks under your stencil when applying the paint. Step Two: Take your pouncer and dip it into your paint.  You don’t want too much paint on the pouncer so just dab the brush onto a paper towel once or twice if you picked up too much paint.  Using a dabbing motion cover the entire stencil area in paint. Peel the stencil away from the wood plaque to reveal your mandala.  Set aside this plaque to dry. If your stencils are all on the same sheet like mine I recommend washing and drying your stencil now. (some paint will probably remain on the stencil, this is fine, you want to take the wet paint off)  If you skip this step and move ahead, you will most likely end up with stray paint marks around the plaques from excess wet paint on the stencil.  When ready to move on, repeat steps one through four on the remaining wood plaques.   All done!  I hope you love your finished Mandala Wood Plaques as much I do!
