To tell the truth I’ve never actually tie dyed anything before so I was bit nervous to give this DIY fad a try. But I decided to give it a go and make some tie dye tea towels and I can now say that there’s nothing to worry about, it’s easier than it looks. Much easier. In fact this whole project (minus dry time) took about 10 mins! There’s a couple of key things to keep in mind – only use natural fabrics as they take the dye waaaay better than man-made fibers, and if you want a bold pattern ignore most tutorials and dip dry fabric into the dye. In my first attempt I tried to dye a wet tea towel but the water soaked up the dye and I ended up with a completely orange tea towel. I couldn’t be happier with my second attempt though! I LOVE the bright bold colour and unique patterns that emerged. Another great thing about this technique is that no two towels will ever look the same, you get a new pattern every time. They would definitely make great gifts (Mother’s Day right around the corner…) and since you can do them in any colour under the sun, you can easily personalize them to anyone’s kitchen. This is a DIY I will encourage anyone to try – please share your projects with us, we’d love to see it! What you’ll need: Plain white cotton tea towels Fabric dye Gloves Elastic bands Bucket Fold your tea towels. For the first towel, I folded it in a wide accordion (about 4”), then starting at the bottom, fold up into a triangle. Continue making triangles until the entire towel is folded. Don’t worry if the triangle isn’t perfect! Secure with elastics (or in my case twine – I forgot to pick up elastics) 🙂 For the second towel, I folded it in a slimmer accordion (about 2”) and left it in a long rope shape. Secure with elastics. Dip the towels one at a time into the dye (wearing gloves). Dip one side and then flip and dip the other side. I held the towels in the dye for about a minute or so. Don’t fully submerge the towel – dip it in and let the dye run through the folds. Let the towels sit folded for about 10 mins and then remove the elastics. Spread them out on a drop cloth or clothes line to dry and you’re done! Check our list of tie dye projects for more inspiration. Hope you had fun tie dying and happy crafting! Coulourful Triangle Tablecloth https://www.andthenhome.com/coulourful-triangle-tablecloth/ Fri, 19 Apr 2019 18:50:33 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=4376 This past weekend found me outside scrubbing winter dust and dirt off of our patio furniture. As I sat in my now cobweb free chair, taking a small break from the cleaning, I started to picture how to spruce up our patio set for a brand new season. While contemplating this, my eyes landed on our patio table. It’s a fine table although a bit….boring. The solution? A new triangle tablecloth! Perfect, now the design. Something colourful is a must, something exciting and trendy would be great. I googled for a while (my little break quickly turning into an extended break) and found it. A geometric print tablecloth, covered in colourful triangles. A fun, easy design. So I got started. I will admit that this project wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Making the triangles does require some concentration, I had some misses that I needed to fix up. And then painting the triangles…. I won’t lie, it takes forever. But the end result is 100% worth it! What You’ll Need: A plain tablecloth or some fabric Ruler and pencil Lots of colourful fabric paint Paint brush A cartload of patience Decide how big you want your triangles to be, I did mine at 6”. Measure 6” intervals along the edges of the cloth. Use a yardstick to connect the lines diagonally in both directions. Then draw a line across the lines horizontally to divide the lines into triangles. Paint in the triangles, one colour at a time in a random pattern. You may need to let some sections dry before moving on with this step. Let dry and you’re done! Although there are only two steps to this project it does require a time commitment. Don’t forget to share your photos with us and let us know how this project worked for you. Looking for more DIY summer crafts? Trendy Colour Block Fall Pitcher https://www.andthenhome.com/trendy-colour-block-fall-pitcher/ Tue, 02 Oct 2018 04:39:00 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=3690 Whether your serving cocktails, lemonade or water at your next gathering, make sure you drinks are presented in style. And since on Home Beautiful’s list of the hottest fall decor trends for 2018 are blue, gold and bold shapes, I incorporated those designs into a DIY pitcher that’s oh so perfectly in vogue.  So let’s get out the paint and invite a few friends over for drinks! Trendy Colour Block Fall Pitcher What You’ll Need: Plain pitcher Navy and gold multi-surface paint Paint brush Sealer Masking tape Tape off a large triangle on the bottom half of the pitcher. Be sure to press the edges of the tape down during this craft to make a tight seal. Fill in the triangle with the navy paint. This will most likely need more than one coat, make sure to let the paint dry completely between layers. Once the paint is dry, remove the tape from around the blue triangle. Add some more tape to form a reverse triangle pointing down from the top of the pitcher. This triangle will be a line, as opposed to being filled in, so add a second line of tape to create a channel. Fill in the line with gold paint, making sure the paint dries completely between coats. Finally, finish with a food safe sealer and serve those drinks in style. We hope you liked this trendy colour block fall pitcher!  Looking for more home decor ideas?  Certainly check out these poolside Beach Decor – DIY Flip Flop Hangers or this Macrame Wall Hanger for Beginners.
