The base for this project was found at a local second hand store.  I’ll admit it, I got a lucky that day.  You really have to go frequently to find awesome steals like this one.  As soon as I saw this piece leaning against the wall I knew I could use it for something.  It had some dents and marks but the frame was in great shape with no cracks or broken pieces and the best part – it had a $5.00 price tag (with the original $29.99 one on the back).  Who would say no to that?? The only other materials I needed to complete my piece were some wooden letters and card stock, both I found at the local craft store.  The letters I bought were wood coloured, so I painted mine.  There were white ones available but I didn’t like the style they had, and the wooden ones were the perfect size!  I picked up a couple of different card stock sheets…because…well, I can’t make a decision in the store, I need to agonize over it for a couple days haha. How to Paint a Chevron – Spring Door Hanger https://www.andthenhome.com/paint-chevron-spring-door-hanger/ Fri, 12 May 2017 11:30:33 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1357 I have an obsession with outdoor door hangers, I’ll admit it.  I find it’s a very simple and clean way to decorate your home.  And since spring is here and the sun is finally shining I feel the need to add to my collection.  I love this chevron letter door hanger and I hope you do too.  Read on to find out How to Paint a Chevron a Spring Door Hanger, do it yourself!!   I have always wanted to use a chevron pattern in my decor and this was the perfect opportunity.  Although painting the chevron was a little challenging, the end result was beautiful.  There is something satisfying about pulling the tape off the product and seeing the crisp lines of the chevron coming together.       The other thing I love about this project was using bright spring colours against the dark stained wood.  Teal is one of my favourite colours so it wasn’t difficult for me to choose it.  The white stamps are beautifully contrasted with the dark wood and the flower accents help represent spring tying the letter “S” in nicely. I chose the letter “S” because it is a monogram of my last name and conveniently works for the word Spring but you can pick any letter you’d like.  With that said, let’s take a look at the step by step. How to Paint a Chevron a Spring Door Hanger What you’ll need: wood plank hanger a large wooden letter embellishments (paper flowers used here) spray paint large piece of crafting paper black marker glue masking tape pencil ruler flower stencil (optional) white paint (if stencil is used) Step 1. The first step is to set up the chevron grid.  Completing the chevron will be the most tedious part of the project.  Begin the grid by measuring and marking a rectangle that is slightly larger then your letter.  Next is to create a grid within the rectangle, measure and mark even squares throughout the whole box.  My squares are 2″ by 2″, which created a nice chevron.  Step 2.  Once the grid has been drawn you need to create the chevron pattern.  Do this by drawing a diagonal line from the top left corner to the bottom right hand corner of one 2 ” x 2″ square.  In the next square draw a line from the bottom left corner to the top right.  Repeat this method until all the squares have a diagonal line. Step 3.  Place your letter in the grid, using a ruler and a pencil recreate the grid and diagonal lines onto the letter.  Don’t press too hard on with your pencil as you will need to erase these lines later. Step 4.  Add the tape to your letter.  Place the tape in a diagonal pattern, using your grid as a guideline.  Be sure the tape is straight and secure.  Use a sharp utility knife to make crisp lines and points where needed.  You should begin to see your chevron pattern.   Step 5. Once the tape has been placed you can spray paint the letter.  Two coats may be needed, allow the letter to dry completely between each coat and once fully painted. Step 6.  When the paint has dried, you can pull the tape off carefully to reveal your pattern. Ta-Da!!  The chevron is complete!  Use your eraser to remove any visual pencil marks. Step 7.  Glue your letter to the wood plank (if you aren’t sure which one to use, check out our handy Glue Guide).  Set aside until completely dry. Step 8.  Time for the embellishments!  Glue your flowers, glitter, rhinestones or bows onto your letter.  I used a stencil with white paint on the corners of my wood plank to give it more character. This project is beautiful once finished.   You can see it from the road and I have had a lot of great comments about it.  The chevron is stunning on the letter and worth all the hard work.  If you have a creative eye you can always ‘eyeball’ the design and go straight to the tape, but if you want to be sure it’s straight, do it the long way!

Ombre Yarn Wrapped Letters for Personalized Fun https://www.andthenhome.com/ombre-yarn-wrapped-letters/ Wed, 18 Jan 2017 12:00:21 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=658 This week we have another amazing DIY project to share with you – Ombre Yarn Wrapped Letters! I was inspired to make these easy décor pieces from all the beautiful examples I’ve been seeing on Pintrest and Etsy lately.  They make adorable props for engagement and wedding photos; personalize any party display or are perfect in a baby’s nursery. It no surprise that big letters are all the rage right now! This project could easily be a quicksie if you’re only doing one, straightforward letter (like I, O, T); you’ll be done in no time.  However, if the letter you are wrapping has a lot of curves (like B, R, P), it will take longer and need a little bit more patience to get the yarn wrapped in a smooth way.  If you are wrapping a more difficult letter, just take your time and use a little more glue spots on the back of the letter as you work your way around it.  Grab your scissors, some hot glue and a few balls of yarn and you’re ready to wrap!   What You’ll Need: Wood or Cardboard Letter Yarn in three colours (ombre works best when you go from light to dark and you can definitely use more colours if you want) Hot Glue Gun and Sticks Scissors An Accessory  of your choice (felt flower, wooden shape, etc)   Step One: Start by putting a small line of glue on the back of your letter at the edge of the first section.  Attach the end of the yarn to the glue.  Begin to wrap the yarn around the letter, keeping the strands touching each other as you continue to wrap.  After you have wrapped the yarn around the letter a few times, add another line of glue to secure the section you have already wrapped.  Continue doing this until you have reached the point that you want to start your next colour.  This should be a third of the letter if you are using three colours; a quarter of the way if using four colours; etc. Add a line of glue at the point where you are switching to the new colour (always on the back of the letter) and secure the yarn here.  Snip the yarn off as close as you can to where the glue is securing the yarn to the wood so that there is no tail left that would stick out.   Step Two: Repeat steps one and two in your next colour. Repeat steps one and two again for the final colour.  If you are using more than three colours, continue repeating steps one and two until you are complete.   Attach your accessories to your wrapped letter.  I used a wooden anchor on my letter J.    Easy and fun, you’ll be wrapping letters for everyone you know!  I liked it so much I made a second letter in purple for a friend of mine who just had a baby.   Like these Yarn Wrapped Letters?  Why not check out this quicksie: Easy and Impactful Clover Chair Sashes
