Food Colouring Painted Easter Eggs https://www.andthenhome.com/food-colouring-painted-easter-eggs/ Wed, 28 Feb 2018 12:30:47 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=2991 Easter is on it’s way!  It’s always fun to do themed activities with the kids and this year mine are finally old enough to really get into it.  These Food Colouring Painted Easter Eggs are the perfect Easter activity.  You likely have all of the materials needed in your pantry already, which makes prep simple and it’s very easy to do.  You and your kids will have a blast choosing colours and techniques to make the perfect painted Easter egg!   Food Colouring Painted Easter Eggs What You’ll Need: Hard-boiled eggs 1/2 cup boiling water 1 teaspoon white vinegar Food colouring (about 16 drops per colour) Spoons Bowls  What you’ll need to do:   Boiled Eggs   Place your desired number of eggs into a large pot and fill with water until the eggs are submerged.  Place the pot on the stove and turn the element on high to bring the water to a steady boil. Reduce heat to medium, cover the pot and cook the eggs for about 12 minutes.   Remove from heat, drain the pot and cool the eggs in a stream of cold water. Food Colouring Painted Eggs Mix the water, vinegar and food colouring a deep bowl.  The bowl should be deep enough to fully submerge an egg.  Use one bowl for each colour. Place a hard-boiled (cooled) egg on a spoon and dunk it into the water/vinegar mixture.  Turn it occasionally to be sure it’s being coated on all sides.  Leave the egg in the mixture for at least 5 minutes.  The longer you leave it in there the darker the colour will become. Remove the egg when you are happy with the colour.  Place it aside to dry. Get Creative   You can always add stickers to your eggs to create shapes.  Simply place the stickers onto the eggs and dye them as above, when they are dry carefully peel the sticker off to reveal the shape underneath! Try putting an elastic band around the eggs to make lines and ‘cracked’ designs.  Use elastics of different widths.   You can also try dying an egg lightly, add stickers or elastics and continue to dye the eggs darker.  Remove the stickers/elastics after to show coloured designs and shapes! Use multiple colours for one egg by placing the egg in different bowls when dying. Using food colouring to paint eggs for Easter is a lot of fun.  It definitely can get messy so keep that in mind when setting up, and the colouring process can take a few minutes…but the end results are too fun to pass up.  The kids will love this craft. 7 Great Printables for the Easter Holiday https://www.andthenhome.com/7-great-printables-easter-holiday/ Fri, 14 Apr 2017 16:00:58 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1134 Unfamiliar with printables? Essentially, they’re bits of art or stylized text that you can frame and place around your home. They’re especially great for a quick addition of seasonal decor during holidays, which is why we’re covering Easter printables today. We’ve looked long and hard for really inspiring or generally pretty printables that you can print off yourself at home and place wherever your heart desires. Here they are. He has Risen! This neat printable quotes Matthew 28:5-6 and comes from One Dog Woof (which is a pretty great name for a website). Bonus: Chiwei from One Dog Woof now sells professional prints of her designs through her Etsy store. Bunnies! This is a pretty simple design. Even the bunnies are simple. But wow are they cute anyway. As you decorate for Easter, these wonderful bunnies will add some fun to your home. Colorful eggs. To stick with the lightheartedness, these eggs will not only bring about that Easter mood in your home (and get any kids excited for any upcoming egg hunts you have planned), they’ll also add a dash of color. Definitely not a bad thing! Artful flowers. Speaking of color, these painted flowers will bring some of their own, as well. A “Happy Easter” greets whoever sees your framed printable, and if you have other Easter decor, this will go great with it. By the way… if you look closely, you’ll even see a little bunny in there. Bunnie’s Delight. Okay, you’ll need to scroll down a bit on the page to get to this one, but you’ll be glad you did. This is a part bunny humor/part homage to the Sugarhill Gang classic “Rapper’s Delight.” You’ll find yourself repeating “The hippie to the hippie to the hip hip hop” all day after placing this in your home. In case you were wondering, this is exactly the printable I’d hang up in my place. All the things. This piece of Easter printable art takes the form of subway art, using stylized text to mention everything from “Here comes Peter Cottontail” to “Jelly Beans” and everything in between. Chalkboard humor. “Easter: the only time it’s okay to put all of your eggs in 1 basket!” Come on, now that’s just funny. And I really like the style of this printable, with chalk-like text on a chalkboard-like surface. Do you have any favorite Easter printables you’d like to share? We’d love to see them!

Edible Bird Nests for Your Easter Treats https://www.andthenhome.com/rice-krispies-nests-easter/ Thu, 13 Apr 2017 15:45:42 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1130 Did you know that a popular, decades-old dessert treat can take on a new Easter shape? Easter eggs are often credited to the Easter bunny, but I like to think that those little malt chocolate eggs (Robin’s Eggs to many) come from Peeps. And how can Peeps make eggs without a nest? Enter Rice Krispies. The Rice Krispie Treat has been a bake sale mainstay for a long, long time. But they’re just boring blocks! You can reshape the mixture into the shape of a nest and then decorate as you please! We’ll get into that. First, let’s cover the recipe. Ingredients: 6 cups of Rice Krispies (of course!) 1 package of marshmallows (10 oz.) 3 tablespoons of butter Okay — let’s get to it! Melt your butter in a stovetop pan. Add the larger marshmallows and stir the mixture until the marshmallows are completely melted. Take the pan off of the heat. Mix your Rice Krispies into the pan. Stir until your Rice Krispies are completely covered. Scoop the mixture into muffin pans and shape the mixture in each muffin slot into a “nest” shape. Allow the “nests” to cool. Now you get to the fun part. It’s time to let your imagination go wild. You could fill your little “nests” with the plastic grass that many use in Easter baskets, for instance. After that, the addition of some Robin’s Eggs (or maybe some jelly beans) will fill out your nest a bit more. And a Peep on top? That’s a real nest — one anyone would be happy to get this Easter holiday.
