The days are shorter and we don’t see so much of the sun. In the dark days of winter, having colour in your home can be so important. And so, my inspiration for this week’s project is born – a colourful, patterned vase. Mixing patterns seems like it shouldn’t work, but it does. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Polka dots and stripes, plaid and hounds-tooth, they go together better than you would think. Using scrapbook paper and tape, this ten-minute project can add light and whimsy to any decor. This a great project for DIY newbies and for pro’s with only a few crafting moments to spare. Let’s get to it! Colour Pop Vase! What you’ll need: Two glass vases, one slightly smaller to easily but snugly fit inside the other  Scrapbook paper Scissors Ruler Pencil Tape Select two sheets of colourful, patterned scrapbook paper. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns! Measure one of the papers to wrap around the smaller vase (or in my case, a stemless wine glass) and use some tape to hold in place. Measure out some stripes of paper from your contrast colour and cut out. Try cutting the stripes into a couple different sizes. Fold the stripes to fit inside the larger vase.  Lay the stripes inside the larger vase and then slip the smaller vase to sit inside. The smaller vase will hold the water so that the paper doesn’t get wet. That’s it! Add a beautiful floral arrangement to finish it off and you’re done!  Looking for more colourful decor?  Try these Colour Pop Coasters. Upgraded Dollar Store Mosaic Vase https://www.andthenhome.com/dollar-store-mosaic-vase/ Wed, 17 May 2017 11:00:37 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=1429 Who doesn’t love the dollar store? The things you can find in those stores is unbelievable. You can wander around and be so inspired by all the stuff that you can upgrade and turn into truly awesome projects. This trip I found a $2.00 vase and some small glass tiles and decided to turn a plain glass vase into a lovely and unique mosaic. This project does take almost an entire day; there is a lot of waiting for drying time. Here’s how to upgrade a Dollar Store Mosaic Vase. What you’ll need: Plain glass vase Glass tiles Tile glue Popsicle sticks Tile grout Sponge   Spread the tile glue on both the vase and the rough side of the tiles. Press the tiles in place. Continue adding tiles to the vase in random order. Fill the entire vase with tiles. You can work your way around the vase, the glue should set quickly to allow you to turn the vase as you go. Once the vase is covered (this will take a while and your hands will be very sticky!) leave it to dry for a few hours so that the glue is completely dry before moving onto the next step. Make the tile grout according to the instructions for the brand you have. Spread the grout over the tiles, filling in any gaps. You’ll have to do this step one side at a time. Let the grout dry for about 30 mins before moving on. When the grout has dried, use a damp sponge to wipe the tiles clean. The sponge should only remove the grout on the tile surface and not from between them. If the grout between the tiles is coming out, leave the tiles to dry for some more time. Once all the grout has been removed, you’re upgraded vase is done! There are many Dollar Store vase upgrades out there. Check out this one from Polished Habitat www.polishedhabitat.com/2015/cheap-to-chic-vase-makeovers-plus-finish-giveaway/

Glitter Mason Jars to add Sparkle to Your Home https://www.andthenhome.com/glitter-mason-jars/ Fri, 13 Jan 2017 06:42:00 +0000 https://www.andthenhome.com/?p=643 Who doesn’t love sparkle? Here’s an elegant and easy way to keep some holiday twinkle after the decorations have come down.  A few jars, some paint and glitter is all you need to make these elegant candle holders for parties, weddings or your dining room table. They could also be used to hold cutlery and napkins, flowers or cosmetic accessories like brushes or cotton balls. There’s really only three steps, but they need to be repeated three times each.  There’s also a fairly long wait time between those steps; for that reason we can’t really call this project a quicksie, even though it is really easy!  I really loved how these Glitter Mason Jars turned out and want to make a ton more in different colours!   What You’ll Need:   Three mason jars Three pillar candles Three different colours of glitter (I used dark purple, light purple and silver) Acrylic paint (I used Americana Chalk paint in Sheepskin, which has a beautiful super flat finish) Foam brushes Mod Podge   Step One: Paint the jars completely with the acrylic paint.  Let them dry and paint a second coat.  Let dry completely before moving on. Apply the Mod Podge to the section of the jar you want the glitter to be on the first jar.  I started with the bottom third of the first jar, the second jar I did the top third and on the last jar I did a strip in the middle of the jar. Step Two: Pour glitter onto the Mod Podge, turning the jar as you pour the glitter to adhere them all the way around the jar.  Don’t worry about wasting any, work on top of a large piece of paper so you can lift it to pour the extra glitter back into the pot to reuse for another project.  You need to work quickly here to apply all of the glitter before the Mod Podge sets.  Do Step Two and Step Three to each jar one at a time.  Allow Mod Podge and sparkles to dry.       All done your new  Glitter Mason Jars!  You can spray the jars with a sealer if you like to seal the sparkles in, you can use any clear spray sealer.
